Obituary

Andrew Clarence Zillinger, the sixth child of ten born to Philip and Janie (Griffin) Zillinger, was born January 1, 1927 in Stuttgart, Kansas, and passed away July 1, 2015 at the Phillips County Hospital in Phillipsburg, Kansas at the age of 88.

Andrew was baptized in the Lutheran faith on June 19, 1932 at the Zion Lutheran Church when it was located in the country. He was confirmed at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Stuttgart, Kansas on March 2, 1953.

He attended one-room rural schools in District #87 and graduated from the 8th grade at District #6. In 1945 he graduated from Phillipsburg High School in Phillipsburg, Kansas. Andrew was inducted into the U. S. Army on May 25, 1945 and was honorably discharged on December 6, 1946.

On October 16, 1953, he was united in marriage to Betty Merklein. They made their home on a farm northeast of Stuttgart where Andrew was a lifelong farmer and rancher. The couple worked together on the farm and raised their four children: Douglas, Patsy, Rodney and Kerry. Andrew & Betty resided on their farm their entire married life of 61 years.

In addition to farming & ranching, Andrew was very active in the community, serving on numerous committees and boards including the Rural Fire District, Church Councils, school boards, and many others.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Rodney; two granddaughters, Krystal Zillinger and Mary (Zillinger) Cates; five sisters: Bertha Whitney, Ruth Hulett, Esther Lynn, Ellen McKinsey, and Genevieve Townley; and two brothers, Charles Zillinger in infancy and Fred Zillinger.

Survivors include his wife, Betty, of the home; two sons: Douglas & wife, Jana, of Logan, KS and Kerry & wife, Kelli, of Columbus, KS; a daughter, Patsy Maddy & husband, David, of Norton, KS; twelve grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; also a sister, Marian King of Hays, KS and a brother, Ray Zillinger & wife, Donna, of Phillipsburg, KS; a sister-in-law, Luella Zillinger of Phillipsburg, KS, along with many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, July 7, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. in the Zion Lutheran Church, Phillipsburg, with Pastors Lee Bennight & Lorna Paulus officiating. Burial will follow in the Emmanuel Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery, Stuttgart.

Mr. Zillinger will lie in-state on Sunday, July 5, from noon – 9 p.m. and again Monday, July 6, from 9:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m. at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg.

Memorial contributions may be given to the Zion Lutheran or Emmanuel Evangelical Lutheran Cemeteries Funds.
