Archie Harrison Smith, son of Martin Ralph Smith & Mary Viola (Wisehart) Smith, was born January 19, 1933 in Kirwin, Kansas and died on July 5, 2013 at the Carmel Hills Healthcare & Rehab Center in Independence, Missouri at the age of 80.
He was inducted into the U.S. Army on April 2, 1953 and earned a Korean Service Medal, National Defense Medal, United Nations Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal. On February 9, 1955 he was honorably discharged from active military service and transferred into the Army Reserves to serve for eight years.
Archie was blessed with six children from a former marriage: Daniel Lee, Celesta Sue, Brenda Jo, Eugene Ralph, Francine Ann, and Greg Henry.
He later married Donna J. Stevens, who preceded him in death on November 28, 2002.
Archie worked construction most of his life and retired from the Duciellier Construction Company in 1991. He recently received an award for 43 years of Union membership.
His favorite hobbies were crafts of all kinds. Most recently he'd begun crocheting scarves and hats and giving them away to new friends he'd meet at his doctor's appointments.
Archie loved bright colors and showed off his collection of bright-colored shirts every chance he got! He also had a favorite straw hat that he'd decorated with different pins & charms that he liked to wear with his infamous shirts. His personality (along with his shirts & hat) seemed to attract people wherever he went.
He was a great fan of the Kansas City Chiefs football team and the Kansas City Royals baseball team. He loved country music and in his younger years enjoyed singing a lot of those old songs.
In 1991 Archie lost his right leg due to an arterial blockage, but he was a self-motivator and accomplished more things with one leg than many people do with two. He lost his left leg on June 28, 2013 and spent his last few months in a nursing home receiving assistance and care. He truly enjoyed living there but missed his Pomeranian puppy, "Little Bit", whom daughter, Celesta, cared for and occasionally took to visit him.
Preceding him in death were his parents; wife, Donna; brothers: George, Martin, Irvin and Gyle Smith; and sisters, Mabel Pears and Vera Ellmers.
Survivors include his children: Daniel, Eugene and Greg Smith, Celesta Stevenson, Brenda McGuire and Francisca Griffith; his brother, Ronald Smith of Warsaw, MO; and his sisters, Ethel Bretton and Delpha Jennings, both of Phillipsburg, KS and Vanetta Woodard of Mound City, KS.
Graveside services will be held Tues., July 9, 2013 at 2:30 p.m. in the Fairview Cemetery, Phillipsburg.
Visitation will be Monday from 5 - 9 p.m. and Tuesday from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. at Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg. The family will receive friends at the chapel on Tuesday from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. prior to the service.
Memorial contributions may be given to Heartland Hospice of MO.
