Our most precious and loving dad, grandad & great-grandad Arlen Butterfield has gone to live eternally with his Heavenly Father at a perfect & special place in Heaven. He passed away on March 11, 2016 at his home in Kearney, NE at the age of 89. Arlen Allen Butterfield, second son of Allen and Louise (Schneurle) Butterfield was born November 12, 1926 at his parent's farm south of Bloomington, NE.
In 1927, his family moved to Kansas where he started school at Inavale. In 1935, the family moved to Lone Tree District in Kansas and in 1938 moved back to Nebraska where he finished grade school at Woody. He then attended Naponee High School graduating in 1944.
In the fall of 1944, he enlisted in the US Navy, attending boot camp and then Amphibious Training in San Diego. He was assigned to the LCS (L) 71 Landing Craft Support Ship on which he made the long journey to Honolulu, Guam Wake Island, Eniwetok, Okinawa, the Phillippines and Japan. After the war, they were assigned to clean up mines in the Yangtze River where he was stationed in Shanghai, China. In late 1945, the first flare up occurred in Korea, so on to Korea and then back to Shanghai and then all the way back to California where he was discharged from the Navy in 1946.
Back home in Nebraska, he did construction work, mainly on the Harlan County Dam until 1952. In addition to working on the dam, in 1949, he went into partnership with his dad and purchased the Sinclair Station in Franklin, NE. They sold the station in 1953.
He was united in marriage to Norma "Angie" Poyser in 1948. They were blessed with three children, Terry Lynn, Kent Allen & Pamla Jan. They made their home in Franklin, NE and then moved to Phillipsburg, KS in 1953 where he worked at the Farmland Industry Refinery before retiring in 1991. After retirement, Arlen & Angie enjoyed camping trips to the Black Hills with their dear friends Merlyn & Dolores Patterson. In 2009, Arlen & Angie moved to Kearney, NE and after being long-time members of the First Baptist Church in Phillipsburg, they became members of the First Baptist Church in Kearney. He loved living at their apartment in Kearney and it was there where he passed away after several months of battling bladder cancer.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Allen & Louise and one brother, Harold Clifton Butterfield.
Survivors include his wife Angie of Kearney, NE; his son Terry and Wife Hildreth of Colorado Springs, CO; son Kent Butterfield of Phillipsburg, KS; daughter Pam and husband Daryl Leidig of Hesston, KS; granddaughters: Darla & husband Jerome Esau of Moundridge, KS, Stephanie and husband Tony Blauert of Colorado Springs, CO, Jody & husband Pete Gregoire of Fredonia, WI, Stacy Butterfield of Colorado Springs, CO, Bridget Butterfield of Mulvane, KS and Shannon and husband Brett Butler of Layton, UT; great-grandchildren: Kalvin Blauert, Dylan and Carter Haynes, Micah and Lucas Butler, Logan and Allyson Gregoire and his brother, Eric Butterfield of Kearney, NE.
Funeral services will be held Wed. March 16 at 10:00 a.m. in the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel with Pastor Stan Murdoch officiating. Burial will follow in the Fairview Cemetery, Phillipsburg.
Visitation will be from 9:00 to 9:00 Tuesday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church in Kearney.
