Arlene Olive Hoover, daughter of Guy Benjamin Miller and Olive Sylvia (Wallace) Miller, was born April 14, 1924 in Phillips County, Kansas. She passed away April 19, 2010 at the Phillips County Hospital in Phillipsburg, Kansas, having just celebrated her 86th birthday.
As a young girl, Arlene attended schools in Phillips County and graduated from Phillipsburg High School with the class of 1941.
She married Ralph F. Case on March 2, 1944 in Abilene, Texas and this union was blessed with four sons: Jon, Douglas, Michael and Gary. The family's first home was in Phillipsburg, later moving to Ft. Morgan, Colorado and to Arvada, Colorado, before returning to Phillipsburg.
Ralph died on July 27, 1963, leaving Arlene to finish raising the boys on her own. She taught in a country school for two years and then worked at the telephone office for a few years. She was hired as a bookkeeper at the Phillips County Review office, where she worked for many years. Arlene also worked part-time at the city library, which suited her passion for reading and studying genealogy.
On February 22, 1980, Arlene was married to John P. Hoover of Phillipsburg, which added five stepchildren to her family: Ron, Ed, Doug, Rob and Roxie Hoover. John passed away on December 8, 1996.
Arlene was a 47-year member of the Phillipsburg VFW Auxiliary #1360 and also a member of the Presbyterian Church. She was a devoted wife and mother and a loving grandmother and great-grandmother. She will be sadly missed by all of her family and close friends.
Preceding her in death were her parents; husbands, Ralph and John; son, Gary Case; stepson, Rob Hoover; and a brother, Guy Miller.
Survivors include her sons: Jon Case & wife, Margarita, of Batesville, IN; Douglas Case of Denver, CO; and Michael Case & wife, Jan, of Greensburg, KS; five grandchildren: Erica, Katherine and Valerie Case; Bethany Wood & husband, Micah; and Barrett Case & girlfriend, Meghann Johnson; two great-grandchildren: Diamond and Jasmine Wood; stepchildren: Ron Hoover & wife, Francine; Edward Hoover & wife, Marilyn; Douglas Hoover & wife, Nancy; Roxie Hudson; and stepdaughter-in-law, Janice Hoover; her brother, James I. Miller & wife, Joanne, of Phillipsburg; and her sister, Sylvia Usrey & husband, James, of Sierra Vista, AZ.
Funeral services will be held Monday, April 26, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. in the United Presbyterian Church, Phillipsburg, with Rev. Harlan Nonhof officiating. Burial will follow in the Fairview Cemetery, Phillipsburg.
Mrs. Hoover will lie in-state on Sat. & Sun. from noon – 9 p.m. at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg, with the family receiving friends Sun. evening from 7:00 – 8:00 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be given to the Phillipsburg City Library or the United Presbyterian Church.
