Armand Dean Gingles, son of Frank John & Hazel Dorothy (Klink) Gingles, was born December 29, 1924 on a farm southwest of Speed, Kansas and died April 9, 2012 at the Kansas Medical Center in Andover, Kansas at the age of 87.
When Armand was five years old his family moved to a farm four miles west and one mile south of Kirwin, Kansas. Armand attended schools in Kirwin, graduating from Kirwin High School with the class of 1942. After graduation he worked for local farmers until his induction into the U. S. Army on March 23, 1945.
He was initially sent to Fort Morgan, Colorado to begin his military training and then onto Leavenworth, Kansas. From there he went to Camp Walters, Texas for six weeks of training and then spent eight weeks at Fort Lewis, Washington before being shipped to the Philippine Islands. Armand spent 13 months and 11 days overseas as a Mechanic (Technician 5th Grade) and Military Police (795th Battalion). He was honorably discharged from the Army on December 6, 1946.
He returned to Phillips County and went to work for D. G. Hansen Construction in Logan, Kansas. From 1959 to 1974 Armand owned and operated his own business, Logan Recreation, located on Main Street in Logan. In 1974 he went to work for the Baird Oil Company in Logan until his retirement in 1988.
On May 4, 1950, Armand married Lorene Crawmer in Kensington, Kansas. This union was blessed with four children: Leland, Rhonda, Vonda and Tamara. Armand & Lorene raised their family and spent 33 years together before her death on July 3, 1983.
Then, after living alone for eight years, Armand met and married Geneva Ann Book on November 29, 1991. They stayed on her farm south of Prairie View, Kansas until 1996, when they bought a home together and moved into Logan. The couple celebrated their 20th anniversary in November of last year.
Armand was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Leland; his wife, Lorene; his brother, Adrian; and his sister, Aerial Lemon.
Survivors include his wife, Geneva, of the home in Logan; his daughters, Rhonda Schurz & husband, Rick, of Logan, KS; Vonda Gottschalk, also of Logan; and Tamara Johnson & husband, Jay, of Hutchinson, KS; his sister, Arloa Clarke of Corydon, IA; six grand-children: Nathan Gingles & wife, Laura; Colby Gingles; Jaime Fabricius; Ethan Gottschalk; Nicole (Schurz) Albright & husband, John; and Caci (Schurz) Webb & husband, Dylan; and three great-granddaughters: Macie and Kylie Albright and Harper Gingles.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, April 13, at 10:30 a.m. in the St. John's Catholic Church in Logan, KS. Interment will follow in the Belmont Cemetery, Phillips County, with military honors by Fort Riley.
Mr. Gingles will lie in-state Wednesday from 5 – 9 p.m. and Thursday from 9 a.m. –
9 p.m. at the Logan Funeral Home in Logan, with the family receiving friends Thursday evening from 7:00 – 8:30 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be given to Logan E.M.S. or the Logan Volunteer Fire Department.
