Obituary

Beryl Ruth Johnson passed away on April 22, 2025 at the age of 101 years.  She was born February 22, 1924 at home southwest of Naponee, NE, the daughter of Edmond John and Helen Etta (Williams) Schulke.

She attended rural schools in Nebraska and Kansas and graduated from Phillipsburg High School with the class of 1940 as Valedictorian.  She also took many adult classes in later years.  Beryl was a rural school teacher for two years before her marriage to Kenneth W. Johnson on May 31, 1942.  That summer Kenneth enlisted in the Army Air Corps so Beryl continued teaching for a third term.  She then lived and worked in Uvalde, TX and Denver, CO before employment at the U.S. Navy Ammunition Depot in Hastings, NE until VE day.  Following WWII, the couple moved to their farm near Glade, KS where they did general farming and operated a dairy for a number of years.

They were blessed with the birth of their children (twins) Thomas Dick (T.D.) and Kay Lynn in 1946 and Jan Marie in 1959.  Foster son Derald Lewis completed the family.

Beryl supported the children in their church, school, and various interests as well as being involved in many community activities.  Friends and relatives always found a warm welcome in the Johnson home.  For four summers she played third base in the Phillipsburg ladies softball team.  In the 1960's she began working for the Phillipsburg Livestock Company and the Chandler Livestock Auction in Smith Center, KS.  She became office manager and bookkeeper for the Phillipsburg Sales Company in 1970 until retirement in September 1984.

Beryl was a member of The United Methodist Church, Order of the Eastern Star, Charter member of the Phillips County Genealogical Society (helped research their book publications) and a Charter member of the Myers-Hesler VFW Auxiliary.  In more than 75 years of membership she held many offices, local, district, and state.  In 2003 she was appointed the be National VFW Auxiliary assistant musician in San Antonia, TX, serving an interesting year until ending at Cincinnati, OH in 2004.

Through the years, the family showed their collection of Guns and Indian artifacts at shows in a four state area.  Their other interest included Civil War cemeteries, Western museums, and Historical sites.

Beryl's leisure time was spent reading, playing piano and organ, corresponding with friends and relatives, and compiling genealogical scrapbooks for her children and grandchildren.  She was devastated when she lost her eyesight.  Her entertainment became audio books from the Kansas Talking Books Library for which she so appreciated.

Preceding her in death were her parents, husband Kenneth of 65 years, daughter Jan Marie Deenihan and husband Michael, son in law Steven Rose, sisters Wilma Schulke and Arleine Lesley, brothers Doyle Schulke and Leon Schulke and his wife Norma Jean, brother-in-law Ernest Monk, and foster son Derald Lewis and his wife Margot and his son Robert.

Survivors include children T.D. Johnson and companion Jenneth Streit of Phillipsburg and Kay Lynn Rose of Agra; sister Shirley Monk of Wichita; sister-in-law Virginia Schulke of Aztec, NM; foster daughter-in-law Dorothy Lewis of Elizabethtown, KY; grandchildren Michelle Brown and companion Marvin Fehlman of Phillipsburg, Michael Johnson and wife Isabelle of San Antonio, TX, Paige Merrifield and husband Michael of Waterloo, NE, Brianna Wolf and husband Blake of Manhattan, KS, and Erin Deenihan ad companion Amanda  Ray of Hays, KS; 16 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
