Bill Vanderplas, a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather passed away peacefully on January 15, 2025, at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska at the age of 88. Born on March 15, 1936, in Sheldon, Iowa, Bill was the son of William and Fannye (Kats) Vanderplas. He graduated from Long Island High School in 1954. He was an active member of the Luctor Christian Reformed Church.
In 1958, Bill went to work at Winchells Inc. as a parts man and in 1974 he and Sherlyn Kats became partners and purchased the business. Bill became the sole owner in 1998 and worked until he became ill in October 2024.
Bill was a huge fan of sports, especially when his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren played. He was a proud supporter of their athletic achievements, often seen cheering them on from the bleachers where his enthusiasm and pride were evident to all.
Bill is survived by his loving wife, Shirley; son Jeff and wife Kelly; daughter Stacye and husband Terry Redinger all of Phillipsburg; daughter Sallye and husband Sean Lee of Omaha, Nebraska and sister, Valeri Mork and husband Ron of McPherson, Kansas. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Twyla McDowell.
He was also the proud grandfather to seven grandchildren; Kacye, Brooke, Raegan, Taylor, Jordan, Meridyth and Hadyn and great-grandfather to ten; Lyriq, Lennix, Taebor, Tyten, Trew, Brees, Maverick, Madysen, Hayes and Hudson.
Bill's family and his work were the cornerstone of his life. He will be remembered for his unwavering dedication to both, his strong faith, and the love he shared with those around him. His legacy will continue through his family, friends, business, and the many lives he touched throughout his years.
Bill will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
A funeral service for Bill Vanderplas will be held at 10:00 a.m., on Saturday, January 18, 2025, at the Luctor Christian Reformed Church, outside of Prairie View, Kansas, with Pastor Shawn Richardson officiating. Burial will follow at the Fairview Cemetery, in Phillipsburg, Kansas. Services will be streamed live on the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel Facebook page.
Bill will lie in state on Thursday from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., with the family receiving friends for a visitation Friday evening from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, in Phillipsburg, Kansas.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Phillipsburg High School Athletic Department or the Luctor Christian Reformed Church.
