Bonnie L. Claggett passed away December 26, 2012 at The Oakes at Town Center in Harrisburg, NC. She was born May 23,1929 to Lewis Lemuel and Jodie Lillian Austin of Phillips County.
Bonnie grew up in Phillips County and was the youngest of 8 children. At the age of 13 she began dating James Claggett. He left for the war in 1944 and was gone for 2 years. Upon returning they began dating again, finishing their Senior year of high school together and graduating in 1947. On June 21st 1947 they were married in her parents home.
The couple lived the first 20 years outside of Kirwin where James farmed raising wheat and cattle. They moved to Denver, CO in 1967 where they spent the next 34 years before moving to Charlotte, NC where they could be near their daughter and her husband.
While living in CO Bonnie worked in various retail stores. She worked many years at a Post Office Sub Station and really enjoyed her time there. Loehmann's, a woman's clothing store was her favorite job where she spent the longest and retired from. She made some life long friends there who remained a big part of her life. Bonnie was a member of the Rebekah's Lodge of Kirwin for 60 plus years.
Bonnie loved to sew. She made cheerleading uniforms, wedding dresses, and all of her daughters clothes while she was a young child. Bonnie loved to plant flowers in the garden during the summers in CO. She enjoyed traveling on vacation to Nashville, TN and Branson, MO where they saw many different shows from country western celebrities to gospel singers. She adored her grandchildren and her great-grandchildren. Also, her grand-dog, Angel. They spent many hours together while her daughter and son-in-law were working.
Survivors include her daughter Kimberley and husband Bill Poalillo, Charlotte, NC; two grandchildren: Justin P. and wife Emily Shockley, Wymore, NE; and Brooke M. and husband Chad Powell, Huntersville, NC; four great-grandchildren: Mercades D. Shockley, Ruby K. Shockley, Olive A. Sabey-Vogele & Parker J. Powell; one brother Delbert Austin, Phillipsburg, KS.
A Memorial graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, June 8, 2013 in the Bogart Cemetery, Phillips County, with Pastor Chris Davis officiating.
