Brenda Joyce Jerby, daughter of Louis & Edna (Landman) Gemaehlich, was born in Neodesha, Kansas on February 11, 1941. She died June 27, 2011 at the Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas at the age of 70.
When she was a young girl, her family moved to a farm near Kensington, Kansas, where Brenda attended school and graduated with the high school class of 1959. She furthered her education at Brown-Mackie College in Salina, Kansas. After graduation, she found employment with the Kansas-Nebraska Natural Gas Company in Phillipsburg, Kansas.
On May 25, 1962, she was united in marriage to Alfred E. Jerby at St. John's Lutheran Church in Kensington. To this union, two children were born: Kenneth and Cheryl. Brenda chose to stay home for a period of time, devoting her attention to her children.
She later returned to work for KN Energy until the company left the area. At that time she decided to retire, providing herself with more time to be a wife, mother and grandmother.
Her interests included playing Bingo with friends and traveling with a group of companions to various vacation sites. Her loving nature could easily be seen by the care she always provided for the many dogs she adopted into her home over the years.
Preceding her in death were her husband, Alfred; parents, Louis & Edna Gemaehlich; sister, Wanda Watkins; and brother, Paul Gemaehlich.
Survivors include her children, Kenneth E. Jerby & wife, Amy, of Colorado Springs, CO and Cheryl L. Bohl of Mankato, KS; six grandchildren: Misty Benham, Kendra Sambrana, Brandi Jerby, Tony Jerby, Levi Bohl and Krista Bohl; four great-grandchildren; her sister, Charlotte, and husband, Tom Crough, of Salina, KS; brother-in-law, David Jerby & wife, Brenda L.; sister-in-law, Gertrude Redinger, and a host of nieces & nephews. Additional survivors include Tony L. Bowen of Killeen, TX and Joy L. (Bowen) Lackey of Phillipsburg, KS, whom Alfred & Brenda had raised as their own.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 2 at 10:30 a.m. in the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel with Pastor Joel Hiesterman officiating. Burial will follow in the Fairview Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Hays Medical Center Surgical ICU.
Visitation will be from 5:00 to 9:00 Thursday and from 9:00 to 9:00 Friday at the funeral home.
