Obituary

Burton "Herb" Van Eaton, son of Warren & Nora (Chance) Van Eaton, was born March 29, 1928 in Smith County, Kansas and passed away April 24, 2012 at the Smith County Memorial Hospital in Smith Center, Kansas at the age of 84.

He attended country schools through 8th grade and graduated from Kensington High School in 1947. He was inducted into the U.S. Army on November 1, 1950 and honorably discharged from military service on September 26, 1952.

He married Donna Mae Diercks on August 7, 1954 in Kensington, Kansas. This union was blessed with three children: Steve, Dixie and Keith. Herb & Donna celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary in August of last year.

Herb worked most of his life as an agent for the Rock Island Railroad, retiring after 33 years of service. With too much free time on his hands, he then went to work for the City of Agra for several years before his permanent retirement.

In his spare time he enjoyed hunting & fishing and caring for his "critters", but his most special moments were those spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. There was nothing that Herb would not do for his family.

His parents, Warren & Nora; wife, Donna; and brother, Merton, preceded him in death.

He is survived by his children, Steve Van Eaton, Dixie Blackburn & husband, Eldon, and Keith Van Eaton, all of Agra, Kansas; two sisters, Carmen Rice of Kensington, KS and Doris Jo Pruitt of Salina, KS; five grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Cremation was planned. A graveside service will be held Monday, Apr. 30, at 2:30 p.m. in the Agra Cemetery in Agra, KS with Pastor Becky Saddler officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the Agra American Legion Post #357. There will be a lunch for family & friends prior to the service on Monday at 12:30 at the Agra American Legion.

Friends may sign his memory book at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel in Phillipsburg, KS during regular hours Thurs. & Fri. and also on Sunday from noon – 9:00 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Agra American Legion or the Smith County Hospital.
