Obituary

Carson Harvey Atchison, son of Harvey & Hazel (Patterson) Atchison, was born June 16, 1941 in Topeka, Kansas and died February 9, 2011 at the Prairie Haven Nursing Home in Kensington, Kansas at the age of 69.

His younger years were spent with his Mom and sister, Marilyn, in Fort Ord, California, where his Dad was stationed in the Army. Their family moved to Kirwin, Kansas in 1952 when Carson was eleven.

As a boy, Carson loved hunting, fishing and sports. He played on the Little League baseball team and when older, on the American Legion team. He excelled as a pitcher and also at the shortstop position. Carson's dad, Harvey Atchison, started and coached both baseball teams.

Carson graduated from Kirwin High School in 1959. For a short time he attended Fort Hays State University in Hays, Kansas, where he met his future wife, Joan Erbert. After leaving college, he worked for the Bureau of Reclamation in Kansas, Nebraska and Salida, Colorado. Later, he started his own successful construction & concrete business.

Carson and Joan were married on March 3, 1962 at St. Mary's Church in Ellis, Kansas. Their union was blessed with six children: James, John, Tracy, Travis, Jana and Jodi. The couple was very involved in their kids' school activities and sporting events, as well as community projects. Joan & Carson also performed in several plays as part of the Kirwin Little Theater Group.

After Joan's death in 1993, Carson continued to follow and enjoy his grandkids' sporting events. He loved gardening and shared much of his garden produce and fresh fruit from his trees with neighbors and friends. He also spent time hunting, fishing and golfing. Carson retired from the construction business in 2007. He was well known and liked within the community and surrounding areas and will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

His wife, Joan, infant son, John, and son, Travis, preceded him in death.

Survivors include his sons, Jimmy Atchison & wife, Roberta and Tracy Atchison, all of Kirwin, Kansas; his daughters, Jana Lutgen & husband, Randy of Manhattan, Kansas and Jodi Bowman & husband, Todd, of Phillipsburg, Kansas; his sister, Marilyn Williams of McMinnville, Oregon; ten grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, February 19, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. in the SS Philip & James Catholic Church, Phillipsburg, with Father Dan Scheetz officiating. Inurnment will follow in the Kirwin Cemetery, Kirwin, KS.
