Logan resident, Charles Arthur Nichol, passed away Thursday, October 27, 2011 at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, Nebraska at the age of 65.
He was born February 18, 1946 in Rooks County, Kansas the son of Elvin "Bud" Arthur & Charlotte (Bittel) Nichol. He graduated from the Logan High School with the class of 1964.
Following graduation, Charlie went to work for the Railroad in Logan. He then enlisted in the United States Navy on April 21, 1965. He spent most of his time on two ships in the Western Pacific Ocean during the Vietnam War. The last 2 ½ years onboard he worked with remote control operated helicopters. He was honorably discharged on April 18, 1969 as an Engine Mate 2nd Class and earned his Vietnam Service Medal with 1 Bronze Star.
Following his service, he returned home and went to work for the CO-OP elevator. In 1970 he attended Vo-Tec school in Beloit. During this time he was united in marriage to Janet Marie McCue on June 11, 1971 in Logan, Kansas. He completed his training in 1972 and he and Janet moved to Colby, where he was employed by Martin Tractor Caterpiller for 16 years.
While living in Colby their son, Ryan was born in 1974, followed by their daughter, Amy in 1976.
In 1989 they returned to Logan where he farmed. He never did lose his passion for being a mechanic, though, working on all his equipment and helping neighbors and friends with anything that needed fixed.
He was a deep thinker, had incredible humor, was a strong Catholic, had a kind heart, and was a man of integrity, values & dignity. He enjoyed the outdoors, working Sudoku puzzles, sports, weather, politics and just enjoying every day to the fullest.
In 2002 he and Janet became "Grandpa" and "Grandma" with the birth of their granddaughter, Renee', followed by their grandson, Dominic in 2005. He was so proud to get the "Grandpa" title.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, his father, a sister, Linda Archer and a step-brother, Dale Broyles.
Survivors include his wife, Janet of the home; son, Ryan & wife, Jennifer of Russell; his daughter, Amy Nichol of Logan; 2 grandchildren, Renee' and Dominic of Russell; his mother, Charlotte Broyles of Logan; 3 brothers, Gary of Lindsborg, Daryl of Lakewood, CO and Ron of Hill City; a sister, Lea Surface of Ness City; and a step-brother, Danny Broyles of Wichita.
Charlie will be sadly missed by all friends and family who loved him.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 2, 2011 in the St. John Catholic Church in Logan with Father Benjamin Saw officiating. Burial will follow in the Pleasant View Cemetery, Logan, with Military Honors conducted by the US Navy.
The Rosary will be recited at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday evening in the Logan Funeral Home, Logan, KS. The family will receive friends following the Rosary until 8:30 p.m. that evening at the funeral home.
Mr. Nichol will lie in state from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday and Tuesday at the Logan Funeral Home, 102 E. Church St., Logan, KS 67646.
