Chester Alvin "Chet" Rumbaugh, son of Chester Cleveland and Kate Maria (Richard) Rumbaugh, was born January 28, 1926 near Agra, Kansas and passed away Sunday, July 6, 2014 at the Phillips County Retirement Center in Phillipsburg, Kansas at the age of 88.
When he was young his family moved to Callaway, Nebraska where he grew up and graduated from Callaway High School.
In 1944 he joined the Army Air Corp, serving as a paratrooper for the 101st-81st Air Borne Division in France, Germany and Austria during World War II.
After his discharge from the military, Chet worked at and later managed the grain elevator in Callaway. After the death of his mother, he moved to Franklin, Nebraska where he worked for an implement dealer and for an electric company.
While attending the First Christian Church in Phillipsburg with some of his family, he became acquainted with Darlene Overman Currence. He and Darlene were married on November 9, 1985.
Chet was a member of the Lion's Club, Elks Club, First Christian Church and Christian Men's Fellowship. He was also a lifetime member of the American Legion and V.F.W.
One of the highlights of his life was being able to participate in the Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. in April, 2013.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Chester & Maria; an infant sister, Vivian; sisters, Velda Walter and Pauline Scott; brother, Milford Rumbaugh; and twins, Edna Robbins and Eldon Rumbaugh.
Survivors include his wife, Darlene, of the home in Phillipsburg; stepson, Everett "Bob" Hindman & wife, Marjorie, of Osborne, KS; stepdaughter, Donna Hindman of Phillipsburg; 10 step grandchildren; 21 step great-grandchildren; 2 step great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 9, 2014 in the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg, with Pastor LeRoy Herder officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in the Fairview Cemetery, Phillipsburg.
Mr. Rumbaugh will lie in state from Noon until 9 p.m. Monday and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral chapel.
Memorial contributions may be made to the First Christian Church.
