Clarence M. Tien was born October 5, 1932, to John and Pauline (Van Kooten) Tien on the family farm near Prairie View, Kansas. He went to be with his Lord and Savior on May 27, 2026, at the age of 93.
Clarence attended Luctor Country School through the eighth grade and later attended Long Island High School, graduating in 1950. As a young man, Clarence professed his faith and joined Luctor Christian Reformed Church, where he faithfully served as both a deacon and elder.
After graduating, Clarence worked first as a carpenter before beginning his lifelong career in farming and ranching. In between, he served in Korea as a sergeant in the United States Army, arriving about the time the armistice was signed. He was a longtime member of the American Legion in Long Island and for many years helped decorate the graves of veterans for Memorial Day services at Luctor and Prairie View.
In 1977, Clarence became manager and later owner of Norton Livestock Auction. He had a lifelong passion for the marketing of cattle and remained active in the business until his “retirement” in 2021. Even in recent years, he continued owning cattle and advising his sons in the cattle business until the time of his death.
Clarence married Bette Van Loenen in 1956, and together they made their home near Luctor, where they lived for 63 years.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Bette; his parents, John and Pauline Tien; his sister, Thelma Vaandrager; his brothers, Henry and Marion Tien; and his great-grandson, Brooks Levi Brubaker.
Survivors include his two sons, Kelly and wife Jayne of Sedalia, Colorado, and Jan and wife Dian of Prairie View; six grandchildren: Matt Tien and wife Lauren of Arvada, Colorado; Morgan Brubaker and husband Josh of Castle Rock, Colorado; Connor Tien of Sedalia, Colorado; Jake Tien and wife Enchantra of Prairie View; Autumn Breese and husband Dustin of Logan; and Samantha Tien of Raytown, Missouri; eleven great-grandchildren: Keegan Breese, Zophina Tien, Sutton Breese, Aleeah Tien, Scarlet Tien, Emmaline Tien, Everlee Breese, Abigail Tien, Amelia Tien, Cooper Tien, and Harlow Brubaker; his sister, Wanda and husband Calvin Schemper of Prairie View; sisters-in-law Joyce Tien of Prairie View, June Van Loenen of Phillipsburg, and Barb Van Loenen of Madison, Wisconsin; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Monday, June 1, at 10:00 a.m. at Luctor Christian Reformed Church with Pastor Shawn Richardson officiating. The service will be streamed live on the Hugunin Family Funeral Homes Facebook page. Burial will follow at Luctor Cemetery.
Clarence will lie in-state at the funeral home on Saturday and Sunday from noon to 9:00 p.m. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home.
