Darren Jo Kogl, of Phillipsburg, Kansas, passed away on October 15, 2026, in Phillipsburg at the age of 58. He was born on September 25, 1968, in Long Beach, California to Dale and Genevieve Kogl.

Darren graduated from Atwood High School in 1987. From a young age, he was raised by his grandparents, Joseph and Gertrude Kogl, on the family farm in Atwood, Kansas. There he took part in 4-H and FFA and earned many showmanship awards for sheep. Those early years helped shape the hardworking, capable, and determined man so many came to know and love.

After finishing high school, Darren moved to Phillipsburg and began his career at Tamko Roofing, where he worked for 22 years. In Phillipsburg, he met Angie, where they were married November 20th, 1989.  Their union was blessed by two daughters, Samantha and Kenadee.  They were later blessed by four grandchildren.

After leaving Tamko, he discovered a true passion in woodworking by salvaging wood from old barns. He went on to start his own business, It Began in a Barn where he shared his talent through beautiful farmhouse tables and custom furniture, including Murphy beds, bars, barn doors, coffee tables, end tables, and crosses. He generously shared many of those crosses with the funeral home for families. Darren was especially proud of his farmhouse tables and would leave his signature on the underside, hoping one day someone would find it.

He will be remembered as very hardworking, meticulous, helpful, and ingenious. Darren was a Christ follower who loved his family and friends deeply. He was always willing to lend a hand, and if something was broken, he could usually fix it. He kept busy and full of ideas, and truly the grass did not grow under his feet. He enjoyed woodworking, auctions, and bonfires with friends, and he was in the process of trying to get started on assembling a ratrod for fun. He was also known as a goofball who loved sending funny selfies to his family and grandsons. Darren could strike up a conversation with just about anyone and was a true “Chatty Cathy.” In his shop, he was carefully organized and knew exactly where everything belonged.

Of all the things Darren was proud of, nothing meant more to him than his family. His proudest accomplishments were his daughters, Samantha and Kenadee, and his grandchildren, Ayden, Bently, Payson, and Emmalyn. He wanted to be present for all of the grandkids’ activities, and that love and devotion will be remembered always.

Darren is survived by his wife of 37 years, Angie Kogl of Phillipsburg. He is also survived by his daughter Samantha Thummel, her husband Micheal Thummel, and their four children, Ayden, Bently, Payson, and Emmalyn of Casselton, ND; and by his daughter Kenadee Christensen and her husband, Dominic Christensen of Hutchinson, KS. He is also survived by his sister, Cathy Brown of Phillipsburg. He leaves behind a family who knew his steady love, his humor, his talent, and his generous heart, and who will carry his memory with them always.

He was preceded in death by his father, Dale Kogl; his mother, Genevieve Bishop; and by his grandparents, Joseph and Gertrude Kogl, who raised him on the family farm in Atwood, KS.

A memorial service will be held on October 26, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, 1115 2nd Street, P. O. Box 563, Phillipsburg, Kansas 67661.
