Obituary

David Raymond Nichols was born April 16, 1941 in Denver, Colorado to Hugh & Vina (Weatherwax) Nichols. As a boy his favorite pastime was watching or playing baseball and as a teen he became interested in racing pigeons. These two hobbies remained part of his life until he could no longer participate in them.

Dave was saved at Denver Revival Tabernacle where he attended church with his parents as a child. After he and Irene were married they attended South Sheridan Baptist Church in Lakewood, CO, which became the Red Rocks Baptist Church and was moved to Morrison, CO. Dave worked as a Sunday school bus Captain and supervised and taught Junior Sunday school and also Junior Church. He was always busy with visitations and doing odd jobs whenever he was needed.

David and Kathryn Irene Skinner were married on July 18, 1964 in Denver. At that time he became a stepfather to Irene's three children, Frank, Adeane and Alichia. They also had seven step grandchildren along with six step great-grandchildren. Dave & Irene were blessed with a son of their own, David, who married Christy Freeman from Kensington, KS and later added three more grandchildren to the family.

Dave lived in Denver most of his life where he was trained as a sheet metal worker. He did sheet metal work until March, 1990 when he became employed as a steel worker on the closure of the Rocky Flats Nuclear Plant near Golden, CO. The crew on that job nicknamed him "Doc". The nuclear plant closed in March, 2005 and everyone was laid off. At that time Dave chose to retire because he had been showing many symptoms of Alzheimer's for several years.

In February, 2009, Dave & Irene moved to Phillipsburg, KS, where they attended the Calvary Baptist Church together for a short time. In June of that year Dave was put in a nursing home in Beloit, KS where he resided until his death on October 21, 2013.

Survivors include his wife, Irene, of the home in Phillipsburg; son, David, of Delores, CO and stepson, Frank Weir of Grand Junction, CO; stepdaughters, Adeane Dellemonche of Denver, CO and Alichia Grammer of Gilbert, AZ; three grandchildren: Joshua, James and Christina; seven step grandchildren: Darren, Aaron, Chelly, Jenny, Miranda, Karen and Grant, as well as six step great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Monday, Oct. 28, at 2:00 p.m. in the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg, with Pastor Mark Gervais officiating. Burial will follow in the Fairview Cemetery, Phillipsburg.

Visitation will be Sat. & Sun. from noon – 9 p.m. and again Monday from 9 a.m. until service time at the chapel.
