Delores Annabell Mettlen was born in Lincoln County, KS on May 30, 1931 and passed away at the
Phillips County Retirement Center on February 2, 2017 at the age of 85 yrs. Delores is the daughter of
Lawrence and Lela (Bates) Mettlen. She was the oldest of 3 children who grew up on a farm near Sylvan
Grove, KS.
Delores attended and graduated from Sylvan Grove High school in 1948. On November 17,1949 she
was united in marriage to Harold Dean Standley at the parsonage of Rev, Iwig in Longford, KS. One child,
Twila Ann, was born to this union.
Harold and Delores had been married 60 years when Harold died on April 28th, 2010. Delores and Harold
lived in Sylvan Grove and Lucas before moving to Kensington in 1951 where Harold was manager of
Home Oil Company and Delores did the books. In 1965 Harold and Delores purchased the Home Oil
Company and changed the name to Standley Oil Company. The Standley's sold the station in 1995 when
Harold retired.
Harold and Delores resided in Kensington for 58 years before Harold's declining health required them to
move in March 2009 to the Phillips County Retirement Assisted Living. After Harold's death in 2010,
Delores continued to live there until March of 2016, when she fell and broke her hip and arm. At that
time she entered Phillips County Retirement Center nursing home and resided there until her death
while receiving Hospice Care.
Delores was a member of the United Church of Kensington and belonged to the ladies groups and Bible
studies. She later transferred her membership to the United Methodist Church in Phillipsburg after they
moved to Assisted Living. She belonged to The Daughters of Rebekah and at one time volunteered for
Hospice.
Delores will be remembered best for her cooking and sewing. Delores always had three full meals on the
table every day and loved to try new recipes. Twila was always treated with her mother's famous cream
puffs for her birthday and the famous cinnamon apples that were a family tradition at the holidays.
Christmas was always a fun time at "Ma's & Pa's". Lisa and Laura looked forward to "Ma" spoiling them
with cooking their favorite dishes when they visited. Twila will remember the hours of sewing lessons
and all the beautiful clothes her mother sewed for her and then her granddaughters. After Twila moved
to Texas they were still able to spend much time together over the phone, where Delores could learn of
her great grandchildren's many accomplishments. She was very proud of her family! Delores also
enjoyed her new friends and staff that she met at Phillips County Retirement Center and through
Hospice. Delores was a devoted Christian and read the scripture daily and continued to bring the word
to her family, friends and staff until her death. Delores was a devoted wife, mother, mother-in-law,
grandmother, great grandmother and sister. She will be missed by her family and friends.
