IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Dennis L.
Riggs
October 22, 1949 – July 22, 2020
Russell, KS resident, formerly a long-time resident of Phillipsburg, KS, Dennis L. Riggs, passed away Wednesday, July 22, 2020, at the Hays Medical Center, Hays, KS at the age of 70.
Dennis was born October 22, 1949, in Wichita, the son of Lawrence and Helen (Osgood) Riggs. Dennis grew up in Bushton, KS, where he graduated high school in 1967; he then attended Emporia State University majoring in Education.
He was united in marriage to Susan M. Scheopner on July 2, 1983, in Colby, KS. Through this union, two sons, Tim and Alex, were born. They made their home in Colby until moving to Phillipsburg in 1997.
Dennis enjoyed being an active part of his community and was always willing to lend a hand. He followed a few career paths, but found his true calling as a District Executive with the Boy Scouts of America, where he worked until his retirement. His time was spent supporting his boys in their sporting and academic activities. In addition, he enjoyed rooting on the Denver Broncos — anyone close by could hear him cheering with "more cowbell". He was immensely proud of his boys and their wives; however, becoming Grandpa took his heart to a new level. Spending time telling jokes, wrestling around, and just being silly with his five grandkids was the joy that radiated within him. In his free time, he loved attending motorcycle and car shows. On any nice day he could be found cruising around town on his trike finding conversation.
Dennis was preceded in death by his wife, Sue, on November 29, 1999, and his parents.
Dennis will be lovingly remembered by his two sons and their wives, Tim and Monica of Wichita, and Alex and Erin of Russell; two brothers, Charles "Bo" of Hartford, CT, and Doug of Bushton, KS; and five grandchildren, Tenley, Brecken, Blaise, Tobey, and Logan.
Cremation was planned. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, July 28, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. in the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg, with Father George Chalbhagam officiating. The funeral services will be streamed live on Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel FaceBook page.
