Donald Andrew "D.A." Hoverson was born April 26, 1934 in Burlington Junction, MO, to Donald M. & Vetah E. (Dyer) Hoverson. He passed away December 4, 2012 at the Smith County Memorial Hospital in Smith Center, KS at the age of 78.
As a young boy, Don and his family lived in several locations. His education began in a country school south of Wathena, KS; then, after moving to Phillips County in August, 1941, Don attended school in Gretna, KS. In fifth grade he went to school in Agra, KS and sixth grade found him in Phillipsburg, KS. His 7th & 8th grade education concluded in Agra, where he graduated from Junior High. Don attended high school in Phillipsburg, graduating with the Class of 1952 and then he took Pre-Vet classes at Kansas State University in Manhattan, KS for two years.
Don returned to the farm to help his Dad, also working for a while on the Webster Dam and one summer at the Phillipsburg Refinery. In February, 1957, Don was inducted into the U.S. Army. He received his basic training at Ft. Leonardwood, MO and was then stationed at Ft. Sam Houston in San Antonio, TX as a Medic. From there he was sent to Ft. Devens, MA to the #4 Field Hospital.
On April 27, 1958, Don married Janet M. Kusel in Kensington, KS. Janet moved to Massachusetts to be with Don during his military service. After his discharge from the Army, he and Janet returned to Kansas and settled in Agra. Their family was then blessed with the birth of two daughters, Tammy in 1959, and Lori in 1961. In 1962, "D.A." moved his family to a farm located ½ mile south of his parents. Their family was completed with the birth of another daughter, Lynda in 1963 and a son, Dan in 1968.
In the spring of 1969, the couple began the process of building a new house just east of where they'd been living. They moved into their new home later that summer, raising their children and making memories there for many years to come. In 1999, D.A. retired from farming and the couple moved into Kensington, KS in December, 2007.
Don was a loyal & loving husband of 54 years, devoted father & grandfather. He left his family with many wonderful memories.
He was involved in several community activities, including Eastern Heights school board, Agra Lions Club & Board of Directors for Gretna, Inc. He was a faithful member of the Agra Methodist Church and later the United Church of Kensington. He will be deeply missed by his family and many friends.
His parents preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife, Janet, of Kensington; his son, Daniel & wife, Michelle, of Valley Center, KS; his daughters, Lori Hoverson of Hays, KS, Tamara Daubert & husband, Paul, of Dallas, TX, and Lynda McKee & husband, Jon, of Brewster, KS; 9 grandchildren, Megan & Shannon Daubert, Braden, Brenna, Brielle & Brylee McKee and Ryan, Dylan & Nathan Hoverson; and two sisters, Donna Loyd of Overland Park, KS and Sandra Black of Garden City, KS.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, December 8, 2012 at the United Church of Kensington with Pastors Melody Smith & Becky Saddler officiating. Burial will follow with military honors conducted by the Fred Marran American Legion Post No. 166, Kensington, at the Agra Cemetery, Agra, KS.
D. A. will lie in state from noon to 9 p.m. Thursday and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg.
