Doris attended high school in Phillipsburg and graduated with the class of 1940. Her childhood memories included winning a race while running barefooted. Recently she and two of her sisters reminisced about the time they had to live in the garage because their parents were afraid they would catch scarlet fever from their brother. They giggled about feeding the pig too much. Even with a large family and small house, farm workers would stay at their home, and one year a school teacher lived with them.
Doris worked at the Kansas Nebraska Gas Company after graduating. She married Lynn States on February 22, 1948, in Phillipsburg, KS. They made their home in Logan and were parents of one daughter, Debra Lynette. Doris was a stay at home mom providing a wonderful home. She was a great cook and prepared three meals a day. Her granddaughters thought her fried chicken and rolls were the best. After losing their spouses, Lynn's dad ate every noon meal with the family and Doris's mom lived with the family periodically. Doris had a "green thumb" with flowers and garden items. Summer was a time for canning fruit, freezing corn, and cleaning chickens. Doris was active in many community and church activities. She was a Girl Scout leader for many years and taught Sunday School at the Methodist Church where she was a member. The UMW honored her for serving as their president for 18 terms. Doris and Lynn were actively involved in the Order of the Eastern Star. She served many times as the Worthy Matron for Alpha Chapter 248 on the local level. She also held district and state positions. They traveled extensively throughout the state when Lynn served as Worthy Grand Patron. She received her OES 50 year membership pin in 2007. After Alpha chapter closed, she transferred to Pleiades in Phillipsburg and then Millbrook in Hill City. The American Legion Auxiliary presented her with a 65 year pin in 2011. Membership in other organizations included VFW Auxiliary and Logan Business and Professional Women. For many years she could be found churning butter at the Kansas Day activities.
