Obituary

Duane Wilbur Horner was born November 20, 1931 in Courtland, Kansas to Lloyd Walter and Opal Mae (Clark) Horner. He passed away January 6, 2012 at the Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, Kansas at the age of 80.

Duane was the fourth child in a family of six children. He attended schools in Stuttgart, Phillipsburg and Glade, Kansas.

In April, 1952, Duane joined the United States Air Force. After completing his basic training in California, he served four years stationed at Perrin Air Force Base in Texas.

On October 23, 1952, he was united in marriage to Monnie Lee Morgan in Denison, Texas. This union was blessed with three sons and a daughter: David Duane, Tony Ray, Ryan Dee and Linda Lee.

After his discharge from the Air Force, Duane & Monnie moved back to the Glade area where he worked at various jobs before his employment at Newell's Appliance Store as a serviceman in 1958. Over the years he became the manager of the store and in 1986, the owner. He retired in 1996 after serving the community for 38 years.

Duane was baptized in the First Baptist Church in Phillipsburg as a young man and later transferred his membership to the United Methodist Church in Glade, Kansas. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge and Isis Shrine. In his spare time he enjoyed traveling, golfing, and fishing. He also created many memories with his adventures in cooking and canning.

Duane was a devoted & loving husband, father, grandfather & great-grandfather. He prided himself on being a good provider for his family and a trusted friend to anyone who needed his help. He and wife, Monnie, celebrated 55 years together before her death in January, 2008.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Harold; sisters, Valeta Smith and Doriene Dishman; grandson, Dustin Coast; and great-grandson, Taegen Jerby.

Survivors include his children: David & wife, Lynn, and Ryan & wife, Cindy, all of Phillipsburg, KS; Tony & wife, Patty, of Glade, KS; and Linda Waters & husband, Rick,
of Stockton, KS; 13 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; one brother, Wayne Horner, of Little River, KS; and one sister, Letha Workman of Lewiston, ID.

Cremation was planned. Memorial services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, January 21, 2012 in the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg. Inurnment will follow in Marvin Cemetery, Glade, Kansas with military honors conducted by the Fred Marran American Legion Post No. 166, Kensington, KS.

Friends may sign the book Thursday & Friday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
