Elsie Lucille Hofaker of Logan, Kansas was born on October 8, 1914 in Speed, Kansas and passed away on May 17, 2011 at Logan, Kansas at the age of 96 years 7 months, and 9 days. She was the oldest of seven children born to James L. and Josephine George Pool.
Lucille's younger years were spent in a rural area south of Speed where she assisted with farm chores and attended Alpine rural school before the family moved closer to Speed. She finished grade school and started high school in Speed. Her mother Josephine died in childbirth when Lucille was 14 years old. Lucille quit high school to take care of her six brothers and sisters, including the new baby.
The Pool family operated a dairy for Speed and Lucille was very active in their horse and buggy delivery service. Lucille's father and his twin brother, John, played for dances in Speed and Lucille joined in playing her guitar, where she reported earning a total of $10.75 during the summer of 1933.
Lucille married I. J. Iman of Glade, KS on November 7, 1934. They move to Phillipsburg in 1936. Two sons were born to this union, Norman and Ronald. Lucille worked as a waitress in the Bissell Hotel Coffee Shop for several years. She was united in marriage to George C. Hofaker on March 6, 1954 and she and youngest son Ron moved to the Hofaker farm south of Logan. Lucille resided on the farm until 2006, when she moved to Logan Assisted Living and later to the Logan Manor Nursing Home.
Lucille was very active in volunteer service to the community. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Logan and served as Secretary and Treasurer of the Sunday school from 1965 to 2006. Among her many volunteer activities were service as Memorial Chairman for the American Cancer Society from 1964 to 2006; Phillips County Board member of the Northwest Kansas Area on Aging for two terms; delivery of surplus government commodities for two years; and Gray Lady at the Phillips County Hospital from 1958 to 1966. She was also a Hospital Hostess (formerly Cheery Cherry) volunteer at the Phillips County Hospital from 1966 to 2006 and she received an honorary pin for 4000 hours of service to the hospital in 2004. She served as Treasurer of Towanda Township since 1988 and as secretary of the Agriculture Extension Board for two years. She was a member of the Rebekah Lodge since 1940 and a member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary, from which she received a 40-year pin in 1999. Lucille and George were members of the Logan Lions Club and they enjoyed traveling to international meetings in Hawaii, Dallas, and Miami.
Lucille was preceded in death by her husband George Hofaker. She was the last surviving member of the James Pool family, having been preceded in death by her brothers Earl of Lucas, KS; Vayne of Otis, KS; Joe of Lamar, CO; Dallas of Scottsbluff, NE; and sisters Erma Farley of Phoenix, AZ and Alice Farrell of Phillipsburg, KS. She leaves to mourn her passing her sons Norman and Jane Iman of Kernersville, NC; Dr. Ronald and Rae Iman of Albuquerque, NM; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 25 at 10:00 a.m. in the Logan Christian Church, Logan, with Pastor Troy Buss officiating. Burial will follow in the Pleasant View Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 12:00 to 9:00 Tuesday at the Logan Funeral Home.
In Lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Church, Hospice services or Disabled American Veterans.
