Obituary

Edna Lou Koester Riemann was born December 5th, 1934 in Norton County, KS. She passed peacefully with her family by her side on April 7, 2023 at Phillips County Hospital. She was the youngest of 6 children, born to Edward and Adeline (Hardiek) Koester. She would walk 2.5 miles from her home on the family farm East of Densmore, KS to Champion Hill School and later attended Densmore High School. As a high school student, she was very involved in activities such as basketball, softball, glee club, student council, school newspaper, optimist staff, and a cheerleader. She was the salutatorian of her class.

After graduation in 1953, Edna married Duane Eugene Riemann at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Densmore, KS while Dewey was on leave from the Navy. Edna had several jobs. She worked for the land office in Norton until its closure. She then worked as a nurse aide at the Norton County Hospital. Once Dewey was honorably discharged from the Navy, they made their home on a farm on Bow Creek about 8 miles Southeast of Densmore where their oldest son, Dale, was born.

They then moved to Phillipsburg where they had two more children, Sharon and Roger. Dewey later built a home at 437 Berglund Drive. Edna ironed, cleaned for people and babysat for several years in her home. She also worked at Mrs. McCray's nursery school and as a housekeeper for the Mark V motel. Dewey and Edna divorced in 1978. Edna later sold her home and built her new home at 640 Jansonius Drive in Phillipsburg. She designed this home and stained all the woodwork. She worked at the Phillips County Hospital for 21 years and retired as head of environmental services.

Edna was very creative. Her Christmas doors at Phillips County Hospital won for "best decorated." She helped her kids and others with 4-H projects, sewing and baking. She sewed all her children's clothes. Edna loved holidays. She would decorate her home so festively and came up with such great ideas for games and cakes. She would make and sew her grandchildren's Halloween costumes, they won several times.

Edna was a wonderful listener and would always be there for her family. She enjoyed spending time with them and attending all their school activities. Her family was the most important thing to her. She was also very devout to her Catholic faith. Edna and her sister, Dorothy, never missed Saturday mass.

She was an obsessive coffee drinker.  She was extremely hard-working to a fault. She did her own landscaping and yard work. She loved her peonies and petunias.  She won reserved champion for her petunias at the Phillips County 4-H fair when she was 84 years old. Edna would make the best oatmeal cookies, chocolate pudding, red hot cinnamon candy, noodles, ice cream and cinnamon rolls. In time, Edna wasn't able to get around well and her daughter suggested she try reading. She started to become an avid book reader and would need to check out books from the library three at a time.  Edna was an avid soap opera fan every morning and afternoon. You knew not to show up at her house while those were on.
