Erna Hilda Gertrude Dusin, daughter of Herman F. and Erna (Schulz) Beckman, was born March 27, 1915 in Phillips County, Kansas and passed away August 19, 2011 at the Phillips County Retirement Center in Phillipsburg, Kansas at the age of 96.
She was baptized by her grandfather at the Zion Lutheran Church in Phillipsburg in 1915, and was later confirmed at Zion Lutheran on November 4, 1928. After her marriage, Erna transferred her membership to the Emmanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church in Stuttgart, Kansas.
After graduating from Phillipsburg High School, Erna taught school in rural Phillips County for seven years. She later worked in the office at the Phillipsburg Sale Barn, where she was employed for twenty years.
On October 1, 1940, she was united in marriage to Edwin P. Dusin. The couple was blessed with a son, Karl, and a daughter, Carolyn. Erna & Edwin had just celebrated 65 years together on October 1, 2005, prior to Edwin's death on October 2.
Erna was a devoted and active member of the Emmanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church, teaching Sunday school and serving in the Ladies Aid.
She enjoyed quilting in her spare time, making special keepsakes for her children and grandchildren. Erna loved visiting and spending time with family and friends. She will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved her.
Her parents, husband and a sister, Gertrude Gehrt preceded her in death.
Survivors include her son, Karl & dear friend, Lauren Wagner, of Auburn, IN; her daughter, Carolyn Smela & husband, Walt, of Loveland, CO; grandchildren: Brian Smela & wife, Jennifer; Jonathan Smela & wife, Adrienne; and Brianne Simoneau & husband, Wes; six great-grandchildren: Katherine & Nicholas Smela, Curtis & Levi Smela and William & Andrew Simoneau; brother, Robert Lamp of Phillipsburg, KS; two sisters-in-law, Ida Krafft & Wanda Dusin, both of Phillipsburg; and many nieces & nephews.
The funeral was held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, August 23, 2011 at Emmanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church, Stuttgart, with Pastor Shelly Klingensmith officiating. Burial followed in Emmanuel Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery, Stuttgart.
