Obituary

Esther Marie Norden, 97, passed away February 10, 2014 at the Smith County Memorial Hospital in Smith Center, Kansas.

She was born July 7, 1916 on the family farm northwest of Kensington, Kansas, the daughter of Henry and Anna (Gemaehlich) Grauerholz. She was baptized, confirmed and married at St. John's Lutheran Church in Kensington.

On September 25, 1940 she married Wilber Norden and the couple was grateful to be able to celebrate 61 years of marriage. They were blessed with two daughters, Shirley Grauerholz and Elaine Bretton.

Esther was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She provided loving advice and spiritual guidance to her family - gifts which will always be cherished by them. She was a caring, giving person who had a passion for using her talent for baking and sharing it with others.

Esther will be sadly missed in the community and by her family and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry & Anna Grauerholz; her husband, Wilber; brothers, Fritz, Carl, Leo and Louie; and her sisters, Lizzie, Mary, Sophia, Lena, Emma and Annie.

Survivors include her daughters, Shirley Grauerholz of Denver, CO and Elaine Bretton & husband, Darrell of Kensington, KS; her grandchildren: Brent Grauerholz & wife, Mary, of Greeley, CO; Stephanie Grauerholz of Thornton, CO; Mindy McDowell & husband, Scott, of Centennial, CO; Crystal Bretton of Colorado Springs, CO; and Justin Bretton of Kensington, KS; her great-grandchildren: Mandy and Renee Grauerholz, Malachi and Elijah Lofton, and Madison and Grant McDowell; a brother-in-law, Donald Norden & wife, Loretta; a sister-in-law, Lelia Grauerholz and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, February 14, 2014 at the St. John Lutheran Church, Kensington with Pastor Lorna Paulus officiating. Burial will follow in the St. John Lutheran Cemetery.

Mrs. Norden will lie in state from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg.
