Ethel Ann (Smith) Bretton of Phillipsburg, Kansas, departed this life on July 30, 2017 at the Phillips County Hospital in Phillipsburg at the age of 95.

She was born November 7, 1921 in Kirwin, Kansas to Martin and Mary (Wisehart) Smith. Ethel was the 2nd child of eleven children. She attended school in Kirwin and spent her life in the Phillips County area.

On October 6, 1939, Ethel married Mavor Bretton in Agra, Kansas. They farmed outside of Agra and Athol before moving to Phillipsburg. Ethel worked at the Bissell Hotel, Martha's Café, the Evergreen Nursing Home and the Phillipsburg Grade School.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Mavor, in 1989; her parents; a daughter, Lila; a son, Roy; three great-granddaughters: Susan Doris, Shelby Jarvis and Lila Bretton; two great-grandsons, Jordan Doris and Taylor Hohlstein; five brothers: Gyle, George, Irvin, Martin and Archie; and two sisters, Mable Pears Fix and Vera Ellmers.

Survivors include two sons, Ralph (Marge) of McCook, NE and Rex of Phillipsburg, KS; a daughter, Luella (Irvin) Snyder of Ness City, KS; her brother, Ronald Smith of Warsaw, MO; two sisters, Delpha Jennings of Phillipsburg and Vannetta (Robert) Woodard of Mound City, KS; nine granddaughters: Susan (Larry) Doris of McCook, NE; Kerri Bouchard and Mindi Crain, both of Phillipsburg; Sandra Fischer and Sonja Bretton, both of McCook, NE; Kristina (Jon) Neigish of Oswego, KS; Amanda Snyder of Dallas, TX; and Angela and April Bretton of Smith Center, KS; three grandsons: Tracy Bretton of Plainville, KS, Richard Bretton of Parsons, KS and Travis (Jennifer) Snyder of Ness City, KS; 29 great-grandchildren; 7 great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, August 3, 2017 in the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg. Burial will follow in the Fairview Cemetery, Phillipsburg.

Mrs. Bretton will lie in state from noon until 9 p.m. Tuesday & 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral chapel.
