Obituary

Phillipsburg resident, Evlyn Marie Johnson, passed away December 12, 2024 at the Smith County Health and Rehab in Smith Center at the age of 87.

She was born February 21, 1937 in Phillipsburg the daughter of Elvin M. and Eula Mae (Barnes) King.

Growing up on the family farm south of Phillipsburg, Evlyn was no stranger to hard work, often found helping with the many chores, including milking the dairy cows. She graduated from Phillipsburg High School with the Class of 1955.

Evlyn was united in marriage to John LeRoy Johnson on June 24, 1955 in Phillipsburg. The couple adopted two children, son Curtis in 1964 and daughter Kristi in 1968.

Evlyn, known affectionately as "Cricket" by her friends.  She began her career to caregiving, working as a CNA at the Long Term Care Unit of the Phillips County Hospital in Phillipsburg, and served the community further in the cafeterias at Phillips County Retirement Center and Phillipsburg High School. Her compassionate spirit continued to shine as a Senior Companion in Russell.

Evlyn's involvement in React and CB Club, where she earned her endearing CB Handle, Cricket, and her position as Kansas State Vice President of Club 20, showcased her dedication to community service and leadership. Her love for animals was evident in the prize-winning Cocker Spaniels she raised, and the vibrant Go-Kart track on her farm is a fond memory for many.

A gifted gardener, Evlyn had a remarkable green thumb, nurturing her many plants and garden with love and care. Above all, she treasured the moments spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, creating lasting memories they will forever cherish.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband John on December 8, 1973; a brother Melvin King and his wife Marion; a sister Ravona Tweedy and her husband Darrell; and two nephews Lloyd Hare and Lee King.

Survivors include her son Curtis Johnson and wife Jennifer of Black Wolf, KS; daughter Kristi Johnson Halcrow of Phillipsburg; 7 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren with one on the way; 4 nieces; and 4 nephews.

Cremation was planned.  Visitation will be held Friday evening, December 20th, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg.  A private inurnment will be in the Fairview Cemetery at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made towards her Great Grandchildren's Education.

Evlyn's legacy is one of love, service, and joy, touching the hearts of all who knew her. She will be dearly missed and fondly remembered.

Rest in peace, Evlyn. Your spirit lives on in our hearts.
