Gerald Lee "Rusty" Carswell, son of John William & Jimmie (Clark) Carswell, was born April 11, 1953 in Osborne, Kansas.
He attended grade school and three years of high school at Alton, Kansas. He participated in track, basketball and football. During part of that time the Alton Wildcats high school football team held the longest winning streak from 1952 until October 1968. The Alton schools closed at the end of his junior year so he completed his senior year at Natoma High School, graduating in May of 1971.
After high school Gerald attended Colby Community College, graduating in May 1973 with an Associate of Applied Science degree in meat inspection.
In May 1978 his son, Travis John, was born. He married Lisa Levin in July 1981. The couple welcomed two more sons to their family - Keith Levin in 1985 and Paul William in 1988. A grandson, Tristin Lee Carswell, joined the family in September 1998.
During his lifetime Gerald worked as a hired hand, hauled fuel for John E. Jones Oil Company, worked at the Co-op Refinery on the loading rack, bartended at the Horseshoe Sports Bar, and was a sales clerk at Sawyer's Ace Hardware. In April 2015 he retired from the Phillips County Road and Bridge Department.
Gerald became very ill on April 29, 2018 and spent his final month in the Hays and Phillipsburg hospitals. He passed away on May 31, 2018.
His father, "Bill", and brother, Robert, preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife, Lisa, of their home in Phillipsburg; sons, Travis of Phillipsburg, Keith of Lincoln, NE, and Paul of Kensington, KS; his grandson, Tristin; his mother, Jimmie; one brother, Kendal & wife, Elisabet, of Garden City, KS; sisters-in-law, Cindy Knight and Teresa Levin; father & mother-in-law, Royce & Donna Levin; and four nieces and one nephew.
Cremation was chosen. A memorial service will be held Sat., June 9 at 11:00 a.m. in the First St. John Lutheran Church, Kensington, with Pastor Dave Hutson officiating.
Visitation will be from 9:00 to 9:00 Friday with the family receiving friends from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel.
