Gladys T. George, age 89, died July 24,2017 at Johnson, Ks.
Gladys Theresa George was born September 6, 1928 to Frank and Rose (Morin) Balthazor, on a farm near Palco, Kansas. She was baptized at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Damar, Kansas.
Gladys spent her childhood years on the farm and attended school at Palco. She completed her schooling and graduated from Palco High School in 1946. She worked at The First National Bank in Palco for two years. She then transferred to the Farmers State Bank at Hays, Kansas. She continued working there until the spring of 1951.
On August 9, 1949, Gladys was united in marriage to Dorrell George at St .Joseph's Catholic Church in Damar, Kansas. Dorrell and Gladys lived at Lewis Field Apartments while Dorrell finished college at Fort Hays State. Gladys typed his reports and his Thesis. Due to this endeavor, Gladys received her Degree P.H.T. (Putting Husband Through) from the college.
In 1951, they moved to Lakin for their first 30 years. In Lakin, they had four children Sondra, Sharon, Neal and Shirley. Gladys was a stay home mom, raising her children and assisting Dorrell with his career.
She was always available to her children and her friends. She was the rock that taught her kids right and wrong. While the kids were in school, her house was the place for their friends. She always had cookies etc. for the friends to snack on. She loved to cook!
She was very active in her church both at Lakin and Phillipsburg and Altar Society whether helping with funeral dinners or fund raising. She even started making wedding cakes for parishioners at Lakin and eventually she made each child their wedding cake. She would roll up her sleeves and did a big part of the painting in both churches in Lakin and Phillipsburg.
When the kids went to college, Gladys started working at the O'Dell IGA Store in Lakin.
In 1981, Dorrell and Gladys moved to Phillipsburg for their second 30 years of marriage. In Phillipsburg they celebrated their Fiftieth Anniversary. They celebrated a total of 66 years together!
Gladys enjoyed her home. She enjoyed remodeling, refinishing antique furniture, drawing, painting, and making quilts. Her house reflected many of her talents. She loved flowers, puzzles, Shang hi rummy and solitaire. She love spending time with her family, her children, and grandchildren. Gladys was there after the birth of her grandchildren and helped the new mother for the first week. She was blessed with great-grandchildren and they were the light of her life. Gladys was "Memo" to all her grandchildren and the sweetest lady.
Gladys was preceded in death by her husband, Dorrell, her parents, her brothers Laurence and Gilbert and a sister Louise.
Survivors are a son; Neal & wife, Judy, of Scott City, KS. Three daughters: Sondra & husband, Gary,
of Bedford, TX; Sharon & husband, Dana, of Johnson, KS. ; Shirley & husband, Jon, of Haslet, TX.
Ten grandchildren: Haley, Thoman, Tyra, Kallie, JD, Tyrel, Kaitlin, Ben, Kathryn, and Taylor.
Seven Great grandchildren: Tiernan, Alexandra, Tegan, Vaughn, Tatum, Tarryen and Rowan
Four sisters: Eunice of Hays, Ks, Irma of Long Beach, CA. Joyce of Denver, CO. and Opal of
Seattle, WA
Mass of Christian burial will be Friday, July 28, at 10:00 a.m. in the SS Philip & James Catholic Church, Phillipsburg, with Father Jose Kumblumka Officiating. Inurnment will follow in the Fairview Cemetery, Phillipsburg.
Friends may sign the book Thursday, July 27, from 9:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m. at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg.
A Scriptural Wake Service & Rosary will be held at 7:00 p.m. Thursday evening in the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg. The family will then receive friends from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. for visitation.
Memorial contributions may be made to SS Philip & James Catholic Church.
