Gordon Paul Dettmer, son of Paul & Ann (Isernhagen) Dettmer, was born October 28, 1943 in Smith Center, Kansas, and passed away December 15, 2015 at the Phillips County Retirement Center in Phillipsburg, Kansas at the age of 72.
He attended school in Kensington, Kansas, graduating with the high school class of 1961.
On August 15, 1964, he was united in marriage to Jean Nedrow at St. John's Lutheran Church in Kensington. The couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2014. They shared their wedding & anniversary date with their youngest daughter, Stacy, and her husband, Jake Timmer.
Gordon & Jean graduated from Kansas State University in Manhattan, KS in the spring of 1967. After graduation they returned to Phillips County where they made their home. Gordon had a degree in Animal Science and went into partnership farming with his father-in-law, Kenneth Nedrow; Jean used her degree in Education to teach in the Eastern Heights school system.
Gordon was very involved with the Agra and Kensington communities as well. He was a charter member of the Agra Lions Club, served as a 4-H leader, was a member of several church committees in Kensington and Phillipsburg, and spent 25 years on the Board of Trustees for the Phillips County Hospital.
After following the sporting events and activities of their son, Scott, at Fort Hays State University in Hays, KS, they became season ticket holders for K-State football and women's basketball in Manhattan. They also enjoyed visiting their children's families and attending their grandchildren's special programs and events.
Gordon was preceded in death by his parents, Paul & Ann Dettmer.
He is survived by his wife, Jean, of Phillipsburg, KS; son, Scott & wife, Rebecca, of Agra, KS; daughters, Lynda Riley & husband, Matt, of Ozawkie, KS and Stacy Timmer & husband, Jake, of Craig, CO; seven grandchildren: Paul Riley; Josie, Jenna and Katie Timmer; and Jesse, Cody and Annie Dettmer; his brother, Bryce Dettmer, of Sterling, CO; two sisters, Bonnie Coop of Portis, KS and Glenda Lindholm of Crescent, OK; and special family friend, Rob Musser, of Good Thunder, MN.
Funeral services will be held Sat., Dec. 19, at 2:00 p.m. in the Zion Lutheran Church, Phillipsburg, with Pastors Lorna Paulus and Lee Bennight officiating. Burial will follow in the Agra Cemetery, Agra, KS.
Mr. Dettmer will lie in-state on Thursday from noon – 9 p.m. and again Friday from 9 a.m-9 p.m. at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg, where the family will receive friends Friday evening from 7:00 – 8:30 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be given to the Agra Lions Club or the Zion Lutheran Church.
