Harding Guy Runnion, age 94 years, died October 14, 2014 in Long Island, KS at his home. Harding was born August 21, 1920 to Jay F. and Nellie (McFall) Runnion at the farm that his grandparents Hiram & Martha (Hughey) Runnion homesteaded in the 1870's, four miles north of Phillipsburg in Phillips County, KS.
He was a farmer, drayman (delivered freight) and long haul truck driver for IML Freight Lines. Harding joined the Army following Pearl Harbor in World War II and served with honor in the Hawaiian Islands/Pacific Theater.
Harding married Luella Com in December, 1942. They had two children, Karen Lee and Ronald LeRoy. They subsequently divorced. Harding married Violet Rose Kelch October 1, 1947 in Reno, NV. They had three children, Winona "Jayne", Barbara and Jay.
The couple owned the Phillipsburg Trailer Court for approximately 13 years before moving to Kansas City for work. Harding returned to Phillips County in the early 1980's after the death of his wife, Violet, and moved to Long Island, KS where he took over the mowing contracts for three cemeteries as well as numerous yards in town and worked part-time for Long Island Grain Company.
Harding married Karen Bulger. They later divorced.
Harding leaves many good friends and neighbors across the United States. He went the extra step in helping others out in times of need without ever a thought of being repaid, that's just the way he was.
Harding was preceded in death by Granddaughter Sarah Hotsko 1979, wife Violet 1981, brother Francis 1991, mother Nellie Shaw 1996, sister Margaret Geber 1997, sister Evelyn Kinder 2007, Son Jay 2007, Grandson Stacy 2010 & son Ron 2010.
He is survived by sisters Winifred Darling & Pauline Tull; sister-in-law Elsie Runnion; children, Karen (Frank) Klein, Jayne Jarvis, and Barbara (John) Hotsko; 14 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, 11 great-great-grandchildren, and a multitude of beloved nieces and nephews.
Cremation was chosen. A memorial service will be held Monday, Oct. 20, at 2:00 p.m. in the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg,with Pastor LeRoy Herder officiating. Inurnment will follow in the Fairview Cemetery, Phillipsburg, with military honors by the Roy C. Goodrich American Legion Post #304 of Long Island.
Friends may sign the book on Monday from 9 a.m. to service time at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be given to Hospice Services or the American Heart Association.
