Harold Dean Standley was born in Osborne County, KS on July 8, 1929 and passed away
at the Phillips County Hospital on April 28, 2010 at the age of 80 years. Harold is the
son of Hugh (Bob) Standley and Lida, (Sigle) Standley and was the oldest of six children
who grew up on a farm north of Lucas, KS.
Harold attended North Delhi Country School and learned about hard work at an early age
by going to work for the Horne Oil Company in Lucas, KS at the age of 15. On
November 17, 1949 Harold was united in marriage to Delores Mettlen in Longford, KS.
One child, Twila Ann was born to this union.
They lived in Sylvan Grove and Lucas before moving to Kensington in 1951 where he
continued working for Horne Oil Company. In 1965 Harold purchased the Horne Oil Company
and changed the name to Standley Oil Company. The Standleys worked hard at building the gas
station business in the Kensington area, until selling it in 1995. Harold continued to work part-
time at his station for several more years. Harold loved spending time at the station with his
friends and taking care of all the local customers. He spent many long hours delivering
petroleum products to area farmers. Many children loved going to his station because it usually
meant a free candy bar or soda pop from Harold.
Harold and Delores resided in Kensington for 58 years until declining health caused them
to move to Prairie Winds Villa Assisted Living in Phillipsburg, KS. Harold was baptized
into the United Methodist Church in Kensington, KS, which later became the United
Church of Kensington. He was an active member of the church and also served as a
Deacon for many years. He also was a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge of Phillipsburg,
the Kensington Volunteer Fire Department, the Kensington Commercial Club and the
Kensington Lions Club. .
Harold was a hard- working, devoted husband and father and a caring grandfather and
