Obituary

Jack D. Dunn was born on November 3, 1940, in rural Republic County, Kansas, to William Lloyd Dunn and Goldie Maude Margaret Stradley Dunn. He passed away peacefully on May 30, 2025, at Phillips County Hospital, surrounded by his loved ones.

Jack spent much of his childhood with his maternal grandparents, Sam and Maude Stradley, who helped shape him into the hardworking, kind-hearted man he became. Their influence left a lasting mark on his life and character.

On April 19, 1959, Jack was united in marriage to Marilyn Faye Dorman in Otho, Iowa. Together they built a life rooted in love, adventure, and family. They were blessed with three children: William "Billy" Joe Dunn, Kevin James Dunn, and Nicki Lou Sammons.

As a family, they were always on the go—riding horses, attending rodeos, traveling, waterskiing, and making the most of life together. Jack often said he and Marilyn "grew up with their kids," and they truly did—laughing, learning, and adventuring side by side.

Jack had a deep appreciation for the outdoors. He loved hunting, fishing, camping, and simply being in nature—whether it was a quiet morning by the water or a winding trail through the mountains. These passions were often shared with his children and grandchildren, creating memories that will last generations.

Jack, Marilyn, and their family moved to Phillipsburg, Kansas, in 1978, where they purchased Phillipsburg Lockers and operated it as a family business for 24 years.

He and Marilyn traveled to every state in the continental U.S. and all but one Canadian province on their Goldwing motorcycle. After retiring, they traded the bike for a quad runner and began exploring mountain ranges with just as much excitement and curiosity.

Jack also enjoyed the simple pleasures of life: playing cards with friends and family, sharing stories, and always making time for those he loved. He had a quiet wisdom, a quick wit, and a warm presence that drew people in.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd Dunn and Goldie Dunn; his brother, Ted Dunn; his sister, Dixie "Dunn" Dorman; and close family friends, Buck Sage and Mike Hoft.

He is survived by his loving wife, Marilyn Dunn, of the home; son William "Billy" Joe Dunn of Ellsworth, KS; son Kevin James Dunn of Phillipsburg, KS; daughter Nicki Lou Sammons (Jeff) of Logan, KS; 11 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren, with three more on the way.
Jack will be remembered for his unwavering love for family, his adventurous spirit, his deep respect for nature, and his ability to find joy in life's everyday moments. His legacy lives on in the stories, traditions, and values he passed down to all who knew and loved him.
