As a boy, Jack attended the Center School north of Agra, just across the road from where he was born and lived most of his life.

He served in the U.S. Army during WWII as a Staff Sergeant and Cook, and was stationed in five different countries during the war: England, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. During his military service Jack was awarded the Purple Heart, five Bronze Stars, and a Good Conduct medal.

After his discharge from the Army, the couple lived in Agra, where Jack worked as a meat cutter at the People's Store. In later years, he also laid numerous brick and block buildings and foundations. In 1948, Jack & Bertha moved their family to a farm 5-1/2 miles north of Agra. About ten years later, they relocated to the old Rose homestead north of Agra, where they farmed, had a dairy herd, and Jack did custom hay cutting and baling.

He was a member of the St. John Lutheran Church in Kensington and a member of the Agra American Legion.

Jack's parents; wife, Bertha; and brother, Arnold, preceded him in death.
