James M. Jackson, a lifelong Phillips County resident, passed away on November 13, 2016, at the Logan Manor in Logan, Kansas, at the age of 93.
He was born August 3, 1923, to George F. and Mary Margaret (Dill) Jackson at the family farm north of Logan, the youngest of four children, and was baptized into the Christian faith on September 2, 1923. He attended the Pleasant Ridge one-room country school through eighth grade and then began a lifelong career as a farmer-stockman, eventually taking over the family farm in a partnership with his older brother Harold, a partnership that lasted for over fifty years.
On March 23, 1945, James was drafted into the United States Army and was stationed at various military bases across the United States before being sent overseas to Japan. His ship was actually midway across the Pacific Ocean when Japan surrendered, officially ending World War II, and he enjoyed telling his grandkids, "I guess they heard we were coming!" He spent nearly a year in Japan as part of the Military Police Action program in charge of a motor pool. In later years, during a personal interview by one of his grandchildren for a school project, he mentioned two separate inspections of his motor pool, one conducted by General MacArthur and another with General Eisenhower. He said that Gen. MacArthur was pretty much all business but that Gen. Eisenhower really enjoyed talking to another Kansas boy. Following his discharge on November 30, 1946, James returned to the farm, where he dedicated himself to meticulously taking care of his land and his livestock.
On September 18, 1949, a second partnership was formed when James married Wilma E. Bach at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Stuttgart, Kansas. To this union two children were born: Robert L. and Karen K. The couple recently celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary.
James and Wilma retired from the farm in 2006 and moved to Phillipsburg, where they lived until February 2016 when they moved into the Logan Assisted Living. Jim then moved into Logan Manor in July 2016 where he lived out his life with the help and support of an extremely caring staff.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his older brothers and their spouses: Alfred and Rosena Jackson, Harold and Margaret Jackson, and William, who died in infancy; and his sister Martha and husband Lawrence Satter.
Survivors include his wife Wilma of Logan; his son and daughter-in-law, Bob and Sue Jackson of Logan; and his daughter Karen Navis of Kearney, Nebraska; his grandchildren: Joe Jackson of Wichita; Sam and Amber Jackson of Plainville; Valerie and Scott Schulz of Hill City; Channing Navis of Omaha, Nebraska; and Emily Navis of Boston, Massachusetts; the 5 great-grandchildren who added a real spark to his life in his latter days: Chloe, Makenzie, and Elizabeth Jackson of Plainville and Jackson and Raya Schulz of Hill City; sister-in-law: Bettie Bach of Sublette; and several nephews and nieces.
Funeral services will be held Wed. Nov. 16 at 11:00 a.m. in the Emmanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church, Stuttgart, with Pastor Lee Bennight officiating. Burial will follow in the Emmanuel Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery.
