IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Jan Robert
Schemper
February 10, 1938 – March 3, 2023
Jan Robert Schemper was born February 10th, 1938 in Prairie View, Kansas to Robert "Bob" and Wauneta (Wolters) Schemper. He passed away Friday, March 3rd, 2023 at the Logan Manor, Logan, Kansas, at the age of 85. Jan was a lifelong resident of Phillips County.
Jan attended and graduated High School from Long Island in 1957.
He was united in marriage to his high school sweetheart, Eileen M. Stutterheim on June 1st, 1957 in Prairie View, Kansas. They lived on the farm near Prairie View, where Jan worked for his father for 11 years, tending to the land and caring for livestock, until together, him and Eileen purchased the farm from his parents in 1968. Jan continued working hard growing their operation, and leading his family, to which they were blessed with 5 children. Jan also worked at the Phillipsburg Sale Barn. In 1981, Jan partnered with his brother-in-law and nephew to start SSS Trucking, and later branched out and started his own company, Schemper Trucking in 1983. Jan, with Eileen by his side, worked as the owner-operator of Jan R. Schemper Trucking, LLC, for many years hauling cattle. Jan was proud of his family business, in which this year marks the 40th year anniversary. The memories and the stories that could be told from over the road were as long and as many as the miles he drove.
Church was an important part of Jan's life, always leading his family to attend. He was first a member and also served as a deacon of the Prairie View Reformed Church, then later became a member of the First Christian Church of Logan, KS.
Jan loved his family. He taught his children many things, including the importance of hard work, honesty, to always be early, how to be humble, and maybe even a little orneriness, just to name a few. He always enjoyed a good time. He loved cheering on his kids and grandkids in all of their activities, especially the Logan Trojans, rooting for the KU Jayhawks and always the Kansas City Chiefs. Jan loved International Tractors and of course NASCAR. He was always up for a good tailgate party, where he would take pride in being first at the track, before the sun came up. Jan and Eileen also covered many miles and loved going to local car races wherever they could find them running.
In 2012, their lives changed when Jan was diagnosed with Alzheimer's, and then later moved to the Logan Manor in October of 2017.
Jan is survived by his wife Eileen of Prairie View; Son Josh Schemper and wife Elizabeth of Prairie View; Daughters Joy Prendergast and husband Richard of Salina, Nancy Molzahn and husband Doug of Agra, and Jodi Bretz and husband Mark of Prairie View; Brothers Kenneth and wife Bev of Prairie View and Douglas and wife Jeniece of Long Island; Sisters Carolyn Tien and husband Arlo of Prairie View and Sandra Dole and husband Dick of Almena; Sister-in-law Joyce Schemper of Kearney, NE; 18 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren.
Jan was preceded in death by his parents Robert and Wauneta, brother Gary, son Brad, and granddaughter Chassidy Breese.
Jan was loved by his family and friends, touching so many lives, leaving behind a legacy to be proud of.
We can take comfort, knowing that he is in the arms of God, at peace in His presence.
