July 6, 1942 – January 25, 2023
Janet Susan Smedley, daughter of Melbern & Margaret (Dragoo) Smedley, was born July 6, 1942 in Salina, KS. She passed away on January 25, 2023 in Georgetown, TX at the age of 80.
Shortly after she was born, her family moved to Lincoln, NE where they lived for about a year before moving to Oak Ridge, TN. The family lived in Oak Ridge for a couple of years before moving to Agra, KS where Janet went to school until the 5 th grade. They then moved back to Oakridge where she graduated from high school. Janet was very involved in music. She enjoyed playing the piano & sang in the church & school choirs. She was given the opportunity to sing at the Grand Old Opry with the school choir.
After graduating, Janet received a music scholarship from Tennessee Polytechnic Institute where she attended for one year & played in the marching band. She then moved back to Oak Ridge & took classes to learn shorthand. She worked for an attorney until the family moved to Utah where she worked for the Salt Lake City Library, first in the rare book section & then the book mobile.
Janet later moved to Ogden where she lived for 50 years. She worked as a receptionist at Young Electric Sign Co. & later for the IRS where she worked for 30 years. In the late 1990's, Janet joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints & she was also a member of Eastern Star. She enjoyed being outdoors; ice skating, skiing, swimming & hiking. She also loved animals. She studied Kung Fu & took a trip to Taiwan with one of her friends. Janet also enjoyed traveling with her family, visiting Europe & the Tropical Islands.
In 2018, Janet moved to Georgetown, TX to be closer to her sister.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother John & sister Carmen Thais.
She is survived by her sisters: Margaret Rose, Abbie Fenton, Kathleen Le Febre & Anitra Breit
Funeral services will be held Monday, Jan. 30 at 10:30 a.m. in the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg, with Pastor LeRoy Herder officiating. Burial will follow in the Agra Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5:00 to 9:00 Sunday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the F. Lee Doctor Library.
