Obituary

Dr. Herbert Bennie delivered Jean Johnson to Herbert and Florence (Nuttycomb) Johnson at their rural home in the Calvert Community on August 31, 1925. He returned on Jean's second birthday and delivered a sister, Joyce (Eckhart).

Jean started school at Calvert with a lunch pail given to her by her Granddad Nuttycomb, which was very special. Merle Stormes and Joel Shelton were the other first graders in her class and Ruth (Mrs. Vern) Archer was the teacher. Mrs. Archer
taught the first four grades and Vern taught the upper four classes.

As a high school student, Jean met Vern Archer again, as principal of ARHS. She roomed with Dale and Norma Barngrover, Mrs. Anna Dunlap, and also stayed in a small house of Hattie Purcell's with Louise and Coreen Davis. Her school car was a Model A coupe with a rumble seat. It was driven into Almena on Sunday evenings and home on Friday evenings, gas was short due to rationing.

After graduation from ARHS in 1943, Jean attended Denver Business School. She married Donald L. Leuszler son of Earl and Zelma Leuszler after Don enlisted in the Navy in 1944.

Dr. Herbert Bennie also delivered Jean and Don's children at the Norton County Hospital. Donna Lee was born in January, 1945 and Jay Martin was born in August, 1947.

Don attended Ft. Hays after the war and home was a two-room apartment at Lewis Field Apartments for four years. They got their first car when he was a senior as they needed it for the drive to Ellis to complete the teaching block.

They lived four years in Johnson KS where Don was coach and teacher. They left due to the terrible dirt storms in Stanton County. They then lived two years in Lenora and Oberlin and ten years in Leoti KS. While in Leoti, Jean had a child care service and her children graduated from WCCHS.

In June of 1968, the family moved to Almena as Don and Donna Lee signed teaching contracts to teach in Almena. During this year, Jean and Don were divorced.

In August of 1968 Jean was hired by Mr. and Mrs. F. S. (Pete) Snyder to work in the First State Bank of Almena a position she held for 22 years, until she retired in August, 1990.

Jean made her home in Almena, traveled in Asia, Europe and throughout the USA; cared for her mother-in-law and each of her parents until their passing. Jean was an active member of the American Legion Auxiliary since 1970, and Almena Pride. She helped write and compile the 1893 - 1993 Almena Centennial Book. After her retirement Jean help start and establish The Prairie Dog Press and was an active worker with the Press even after her loss of sight.

She was preceded in death by her parents, former husband and son Jay Martin Leuszler.

Jean is survived by her daughter Donna Lee, Almena, and sister Joyce Eckhart, Logan, daughter-in-law Janet Leuszler, 2 step grandchildren, Christopher and wife Cindy Eckert and Danielle DeCarlucci of Odessa, FL. 3 great-grandchildren, Madison DeCarlucci, and Jay Martin and Taylor Eckert. 9 nieces and nephews and their children.
