Obituary

Joan Faye Scheetz Whitney was born September 22, 1928, and died July 27, 2012, at the age of 83 at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, Nebraska.

Joan Scheetz was born in Norcatur, Kansas to Fred A. Scheetz and Alta F. Thompson Scheetz, the oldest of three children. She attended schools in Norcatur and Norton, Kansas, and Marymount College in Salina.

She and Eddie W. Whitney were married at the Catholic Rectory in Norton, Kansas, on August 25, 1947. They lived in Omaha, Nebraska, before returning to Norton where Eddie joined Fred and Bill Scheetz, his father-in-law and brother-in-law, at Scheetz Motor Company.

They became parents to Mark C. Whitney and Kevin M. Whitney. Joan owned and operated the Cottage Style Shop, a women's clothing store, in Norton for many years. She and Eddie loved to travel and had friends and family across the country that they visited whenever they had the opportunity. They made several trips abroad. She belonged to the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church and the Altar Society in Norton and enjoyed her friends in the Tuesday Bridge group.

Joan was predeceased by her parents, brothers Bill Scheetz and David Scheetz and her son, Kevin Whitney.

Joan is survived by her husband, Eddie W. Whitney, of the home, Mark C. Whitney and his wife Torre, of Norton, daughter-in-law Marnie Whitney of Olathe, Kansas, grandchildren, Elijah Whitney and Corrie Price and their son Boston of Kansas City, Missouri, Marissa Niemeyer and her husband, Tony, of Edgerton, Kansas. She is also survived by her step-grandchildren, Teresa Douthit and son, Grant, of Manhattan, Kansas, Chad Douthit and wife, Tonya, and son, Oliver, of Basehor, Kansas, and Megan and husband, Chuck Downey and son, Carter, of St. Francis, Kansas, and many dear cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

A scriptural wake service will be held at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 31, 2012 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Norton. The family will receive friends following the Wake until 8:30 p.m. in the church.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church with Fathers Vincent Thu Laing and Dan Scheetz officiating. Burial will follow in the Norton Cemetery, Norton, KS.

Joan will lie in state at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesday.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Church, Norton American Legion Auxiliary or Mary Elizabeth House of Hays.
