Joanne Marie (Dahlke) Johnson, 76, was born on a farm one mile east and 1/4 mile south of Agra, in Phillips
County on January 21, 1935 to Paul John Dahlke and Lucile Marie (Strodtbeck) Dahlke. She passed away
at the Hays Medical Center in Hays, KS on December 10, 2011 after a short illness.
Her family moved to a farm 3 miles north of Phillipsburg when she was a little over a year old. She
attended country schools for 2 1/2 years before entering the Phillipsburg school system. She graduated
from Phillipsburg High School in 1953. She attended Fort Hays College graduating from their nursing
program in 1956.
She married Merlyn E. Johnson on January 6, 1957 at the First Presbyterian Church in Phillipsburg. To
this union, three sons were born, Craig Eugene, Douglas Dale and Barry Lee. Joanne worked as a
registered nurse and later hospital administrator at the Phillips County Hospital; she retired in 1990 after
33 years of service.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Phillips County Genealogy Society, American
Nursing Association, VFW Auxiliary, and past board member of the Northwest Kansas Family Shelter.
Joanne enjoyed traveling and making Afghans. She filled many years with recording family history. She
was preceded in death by her husband Merlyn. She is survived by her three sons, Craig of Wamego, KS,
Douglas and wife Tedde of Kearney, MO, and Barry and wife Michelle of Littleton, CO. Five
grandchildren, Adam of Manhattan, KS, Elliot of Lawrence, KS, Paul of Manhattan, KS, Heather of
Littleton, CO and Niklaus of Littleton, CO; one great-grandchild, Vincent of Manhattan, KS.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, December 16, 2011 in the United Presbyterian Church with Pastor Chris Davis officiating. Burial will follow in the Fairview Cemetery, Phillipsburg.
Joanne will lie in state from Noon until 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday, 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home and until service time Friday at the church.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Phillips County Hospital or United Presbyterian Church.
