Johanna Margaret Soodsma, second child of Klaas & Margaret (VanderLugt) Van Dyke, was born into a God-fearing farm family on September 7, 1930 in Beaver Creek, Minnesota.
She grew up near Leota, Minnesota and graduated from Western Christian High School in 1948. She went on to teach grade school at Inwood, Orange City, Pease, Leota and Cutlerville Christian Schools.
On August 27, 1959 Johanna married Rufus Soodsma in Orange City, Iowa. The couple first lived in Sioux Falls and then moved to Denver, Colorado. Their family was blessed with four sons and a daughter.
A dedicated wife and mother, Johanna enjoyed gardening, reading, playing the piano and singing. The family often traveled to visit relatives and friends.
Following their retirement in 1999, the couple moved to Phillipsburg, Kansas where Johanna kept active with the community Bible study, the Gideons, the Luctor Church, and the Phillips County Hospital Auxiliary.
On June 7, 2013 she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and passed peacefully into Glory at her home in Phillipsburg on July 5, 2013.
Preceding her in death were her parents and a grandson, Timothy Soodsma.
Survivors include her husband, Rufus, of the home; sons, Joel & wife, Corinne, of Alberta, Canada; Stuart and Stephen, both of Bellevue, NE; and Jason & wife, Karen, of Aurora, CO; daughter, Ruth Moses & husband, Kenneth, of Bellevue, NE; brothers, Henry Van Dyke of Leota, MN and Peter Van Dyke of Seattle, WA; sisters, Cynthia Roelofs of Grand Rapids, MI; Marlyce Mulder of Orlando, FL; and Ethel Potes of Sparta, MI; and twelve grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 9, 2013 at the Luctor Cemetery, Phillips County, KS followed by a memorial service at 11:00 a.m. in the Luctor Christian Reformed Church with Pastor Ian Van Leeuwen officiating.
Johanna will lie in state Sunday from Noon until 9:00 p.m. and Monday from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel. The family will receive friends for visitation from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday evening at the funeral chapel.
Memorial Contributions may be made to the Gideon's, Hospice Services, Inc. or the Luctor Christian Reformed Church.
