Obituary

John W. Gibbs was born in Delphos, KS on Jan. 9, 1930, the son of Wilbur & Hazel (Pinney) Gibbs. He passed away Monday, Dec. 11, 2017 at the Phillips County Hospital in Phillipsburg, KS at the age of 87, surrounded by his family.

John married Joyce Halderson on Dec. 24, 1950 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Glasco, KS. He was then sent to Korea where he served in the U.S. Army as a mortar man. John's grandson, Zac's, first military assignment was also in Korea. They often shared Korea stories, although they had to admit that times had changed a bit in between their service.

John and Joyce moved to Phillipsburg to raise their family. John worked for Coop Refinery Association. They had three children; Randy, Martin and Melissa. His son, Martin John Gibbs, preceded him in death.

John loved to be outside and could typically be found golfing or fishing. He was a pilot and enjoyed flying when he could, until an accident with a propeller almost took his arm & would have ruined his golf game. John also enjoyed woodworking and tinkering in his shop. He and Joyce spent much of their retired time together traveling. They enjoyed going South in the winter (where the golf was better). He also enjoyed camping with his grandchildren and took any chance he could to take them along. Each of them has many fond memories of adventures in their grandparent's camper.

Health issues moved them to WaKeeney for a short time, but they missed being at home in Phillipsburg and moved back to be with their lifelong friends. John always considered himself a "Phillipsburger" and wanted to be back home when he was hospitalized in Hays with his most recent illness.

Survivors include his wife, Joyce, of Phillipsburg; son, Randy Gibbs (wife Amy), of WaKeeney, KS; daughter, Melissa McKee (husband Chris) of Abilene, KS; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Cremation was chosen. A memorial service will be held Friday, Dec. 15, at 11:00 a.m. in the Zion Lutheran Church, Phillipsburg, with Pastors Lee Bennight and Lorna Paulus officiating.

Friends may sign the book on Thursday, Dec. 14, from 9 a.m. – 9 p.m. at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg.

Memorial contributions may be given to the Zion Lutheran Church or Donor's Choice.
