Keith Matthew Whitney, son of Carl A. and Bessie (Watkins) Whitney, was born December 28,
1919 in Agra, KS (Phillips County) and passed away Wednesday January 18,2012 at Phillips
County Hospital at the age of 92.
Keith attended Agra Elementary School and graduated from Agra Rural High School in 1938. He was baptized in the Christian Church in Agra in 1931. He attended Kansas State College in Manhattan, KS from 1940-1941, then he was inducted into the US Army on March 16, 1942, and served as an Intelligence and Operations Staff Sargent in the 42nd Rainbow Division in France and Germany until January 11, 1946 when he was honorably discharged from the Service. He was awarded two bronze star medals for meritorious service, the Combat Infantryman badge, the Good Conduct medal, and the World War II Victory Ribbon.
Keith married Emily Alice Shearer on June 22, 1947 and they had two daughters, Vickie and
Carol.
Keith was recalled to serve one year in the US Air Force during the Korean War from 1950 to
1951. He returned to Phillipsburg to make his home and went to work at the CRA Refinery. He
worked as a lab technician and retired in 1983 after 31 years. After retirement he enjoyed
golfing, gardening, fishing, attending Kansas State University football games and traveling to
visit family.
Keith was very active in the community serving on the Phillipsburg City Council for 12 years,
President and grounds keeper of the Phillipsburg Golf Course for many years. He was member
and past commander of the VFW Post 1360, member of the Elks Club, IOOF, and AARP and a
member of the United Methodist Church.
Keith was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Douglas Whitney in 1989 and
Raymond Whitney in 2007.
Survivors include: wife (Emily) Alice (Shearer) Whitney of the home; daughters Vickie Artis
(Dave) of Naperville, IL and Carol Stoltz (Jim) of Wichita, KS; grandchildren Brad (Michelle)
Artis; Heather (Joe) Chura; Hayley Artis all from Illinois, Matthew Stoltz, Wichita, Mark Stoltz,
Kansas City, MO; Emily Stoltz, Wichita and Sarah Stoltz, Wichita. Great Grandchildren: Austin
James Artis and Dylan Keith Artis, and Morgan Chura.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Jan. 28 at 10:30 a.m. in the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel with Rev. Gary Davison officiating. Burial will follow in the Fairview Cemetery with military honors by the Ft. Riley Honor Guard.
Visitation will be from 5:00 to 9:00 Thurs. & 9:00 to 9:00 Friday at the funeral home.
Memorials have been established to the American Cancer Society or the Arthritis Foundation.
