Obituary

Leo Mathias Noel, son of Jacob "Jake" and Anna (O'Connell) Noel, was born July 10, 1927 on a farm northwest of Logan that was homesteaded by his grandfather, John Noel, Sr. He died on December 6, 2011 at the Phillips County Hospital in Phillipsburg, Kansas at the age of 84.

Leo was raised on the family farm northwest of Logan and graduated from Logan High School in 1945. After graduation he helped his father on the farm and ran the township road grader. In 1950 he was drafted into the Army and served in the motor pool in Company M during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in October, 1952.

On May 25, 1953 he was united in marriage to Genevieve "Jean" Noel at the St. John's Catholic Church in Logan, Kansas. They started their married life on his Uncle Frank's farm northwest of Logan. To this union five children were born: Thomas, Karen, Katherine, Anna and David.

In 1965 the family moved into Logan where Leo started working on the Pulling Unit for Shirks's and later for Patterson's. He then went to work for Petroleum Management as a roustabout and pumper until 1986. In June of 1986 they bought the liquor store from the Jandera's and ran the store until Leo retired in 1992.

He was a member of St. John's Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, Ralph DeFors American Legion of Logan and Veterans of Foreign Wars, Myers-Hesler Post of Phillipsburg. Leo was also an honorary member of the Logan Fire Department after serving for 30 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents; infant daughter, Katherine; brothers and their wives: James & Helen, Charles & Geraldine, Max & Aileen, Francis, and sister, Jeannette & Lawrence Lohrmeyer.

He is survived by his wife, Genevieve; his children and their spouses: Thomas & Linda Noel of Sidney, NE; Karen & Floyd Long of Kimball, NE; Anna & Dale Brophy of Commerce City, CO; and David & Brenda Noel of Sidney, NE; sister-in-law, Mary Noel of Marysville, MO; ten grandchildren: Jessica Webb, Melissa Noel, Kimberly Noel, Jacob Noel, Tim Long, Samantha Long, Sean Brophy, Michael Brophy, Jason Noel and Tyler Noel; five great-grandchildren and many nieces & nephews.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held Sat., Dec. 10, at 10:00 a.m. in the St. John's Catholic Church, Logan, with Father Benjamin Saw officiating. Burial will follow in the Pleasant View Cemetery, Logan, with military honors by Fort Riley.

Visitation will be Thursday from noon – 9:00 p.m. and Friday from 9:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m. at the Logan Funeral Home in Logan. A Scriptural Wake service will be held Friday evening, Dec. 9, at 7:00 p.m. in the funeral home with the family receiving friends from 7:30 – 8:30 p.m. that evening.

Memorial contributions may be given to the Logan Ambulance Service.
