Leona Marie Surface passed away at Cedar Village Nursing home in Ness City, KS, on November 18, 2025. She was born at Limes Maternity Clinic Logan, KS on November 19, 1948 to Elvin" Bud" and Charlotte Bittel-Nichol. She grew up on the family farm on Bow Creek in Rooks County. Leona attended grade school and high school in Logan, KS. Where she graduated in May of 1966. She then attended Brown-Mackie School of business in Salina, KS. She started working in Salina then moved to Ravenna, NE, then back to Hays where she met the love of her life, and also worked 25 years for Travenol. She was united in marriage to Ronald Surface on August 23, 1980, at St. John's Catholic Church in Logan. They lived in Rush Center for 12 years. During that time she helped Ron with his business "The Clock Maker." She would glue pictures onto the plaques and clocks for him. They attended many craft and county fairs selling the items. Leona liked to go dancing, listening to music, traveling, playing cards and going to Bingo with Ron. She enjoyed watching her Chicago Bears football and KU Jayhawks basketball. And you did not call her during the games. They moved to Ness City in 1992. They had no children except for their fur babies and helping out with her nieces and nephews. Leona was a caring and happy person. She always had a smile on her face.
She was preceded in death by her father, mother, step-father, Loren Broyles, brother Charlie and his wife Janet, sister Linda and her husband Keith Archer, nephew Troy Nichol, niece Shannon Nichol, stepbrothers Dale and Danny Broyles, brother's-in-law Bob Feck and Leland Surface, and nephew Yancy Feck.
She leaves to mourn her husband Ron of the home and fur babies Fuzzy and Socks; brothers Gary and wife Alta of Lindsborg, KS, Daryl and wife Carol of Littleton, CO, Ron and wife Nancy of Hill City, KS; sisters Gayla and Jim Bieker of Lawrence, KS and Shirley Feck of Rush Center, KS; a host of nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews; Aunts, Uncle, cousins, and many friends. She will be missed by many.
Services will be held for Leona at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ness City on December 2, 2025 at 11:00 am. Burial will be in the Pleasant View Cemetery, Logan, KS, at 2:00 pm, on December 3rd.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Cedar Village Nursing Home in Ness City, KS.
