Obituary

Loren L. Ferguson, son of Roy & Sophia (Howard) Ferguson, was born January 23, 1923 on a farm in rural Phillips County, Kansas, and passed away January 30, 2011 at the Phillips County Hospital in Phillipsburg, Kansas one week after his 88th birthday.

As a boy, he attended country schools in Phillips County. On May 18, 1944, Loren was inducted into the U.S. Army and reported for basic training in Ft. Logan, Colorado. He served as a Gun Crewman Pack Artillery instructor during World War II. On May 16, 1946, he was honorably discharged from military service.

Loren was united in marriage to Jean Marie Davis on June 18, 1945 in Norton, Kansas. The couple made their home on a farm southeast of Phillipsburg. Their union was blessed by three children: Virginia, Jim and Lynn.

Loren chose farming as his life's work because of his love for the land. In 1972, Loren & Jean earned the Kansas Banker's Soil Conservation Award and then in 2002, he received the Conservation Windbreak Award.

Loren was a member of the Presbyterian Church and the NRA. He cherished his family and enjoyed being able to spend time with his grandkids. He will long be remembered for his honesty and integrity, his smile and good nature, and his stewardship of the land. Nothing made him happier than to drive by his fields and admire a good crop, knowing that his labor, together with God's handiwork, had created something to be proud of.

Loren was preceded in death by his wife, Jean, in 1999; by his parents, Sophia & Roy; his sister, Verleen; and his granddaughter, Krinda Lynn Ferguson.

Survivors include his sons, Jim, of Agra, KS and Lynn of rural Agra, KS; daughter, Virginia Korobka of Hays, KS; brother, Orval Ferguson of Phillipsburg, KS; and two grandchildren, Brice Korobka of rural Phillipsburg, KS and Gage Korobka of Hays

Funeral services will be held Friday, Feb. 4 at 2:00 p.m. in the United Presbyterian Church, Phillipsburg, with Rev. Chris Davis officiating. Burial will follow in the Fairview Cemetery with military honors by Ft. Riley Honor Guard.

The casket will be closed. Friends may sign the book from 4:00 to 9:00 Wed. & 9:00 to 9:00 Thurs. at the funeral home.
