Loren Lee Larick, son of Fred & Lela (Beedy) Larick, was born May 1, 1930 on the farm north of Agra, Kansas. He grew up on the farm with three older brothers: Willie, Donald and Edwin. Loren graduated from high school in Agra and always enjoyed attending the alumni banquets.
In 1952 he enlisted in the Army and served in Tokyo, Japan in the motor pool as a mechanic and military police. Loren spent 23 months in the Army before his discharge, but continued to be involved with the American Legion in Agra throughout his life. Memorial Day was always special as he would put out the flags and help with ceremonies at both the Agra Cemetery and West Cedar Cemetery. He was also actively involved with the Boy Scouts for many years.
Loren farmed with his brother, Edwin. Edwin loved his tractors and farming and Loren loved to have a wrench in hand and work on the tractors. He was always glad to work on equipment for a neighbor or friend and was especially proud when he was able to get a piece of machinery running "just right" when no one else could find the problem. He also seemed to have a knack for water and oil "witching."
Besides mechanic work, Loren loved going to farm sales. He'd bring home a bucket of bolts or a box of junk for a dollar or two and then find that "one little part" in that bargain box that he needed later for one of his vehicle repairs. Then he would "brag" about how much that part would have cost him at the store and how much money he had saved!
Loren also had a great love for family and his family's history. He helped some members of his family compile books with photos and information on the Larick family genealogy. Edwin & Loren attended a family reunion together in California and Loren attended other reunions in Colorado, Nebraska and Iowa.
In the last few years Loren felt it was his mission to care for his brother, Edwin, and his sister-in-law, Ethel. He was kind and compassionate and did all he could to assist them with meals, shopping and everyday chores. However, Loren's health began to fail shortly after Edwin's death and in the summer of 2009, Ethel was moved to the Phillips County Retirement Center in Phillipsburg. It then became necessary for Loren to move into the Agra Assisted Living facility and eventually to Prairie Haven Nursing Home in Kensington, Kansas where he passed from this life on December 11, 2011 at the age of 81.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Fred & Lela Larick; his brothers, Willie, Donald and Edwin, and an infant sister, Wilma Wyone.
Survivors include his nephews: Wayne Larick and Warren Larick & wife, Jenny, all of Agra, KS; his nieces: Edna & husband, Bryan Bolen, of Sharon Springs, KS and Mary & husband, Gordon Breit, of Utica, KS; his sister-in-law, Ethel Larick of Phillipsburg; several great nieces & nephews and many neighbors and friends.
Funeral services will be held Thurs. Dec. 15 at 2:00 p.m. in the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg, with Patrick Allen officiating. Burial will follow in the West Cedar Cemetery, Phillips County, with military honors by the Agra American Legion.
Visitation will be from noon to 9:00 Wed. at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Agra Fire Dept. or the Agra People's Store.
