Nellie Lucille (Gipe) Kennedy, youngest daughter of Maud Frances (Cook) Gipe and
Arthur Levi Gipe was born December 29, 1919 in Phillips County, Kansas. She passed
away Wednesday, September 12, 2012 at the Phillips County Retirement Center in Phillipsburg, KS at the age of 92.
Lucille attended the Walnut school in Walnut Township and graduated from the 8th
grade.
On May 18, 1938 she was united in marriage to George B. Kennedy in Phillipsburg,
Kansas. Those witnessing their marriage were Hilda (Kennedy) Pollard and Ora Duree,
sister and brother- in-law of the groom. Four children came to bless this union: Phyllis
Anne, George Arthur, Darlene Kaye, and Clarence DeWayne.
Over the years Lucille worked for various employers: the sale barn in Alma, Nebraska, Cramer's Snack Shack at Harlan County Lake, The Phillipsburg Sale Barn Cafe, Bissell Hotel Coffee
Shop, E & M Cafe, The Phillips County Home, and the Phillips County Retirement
Center. She retired in 2003.
Lucille was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur & Maud Gipe; her daughter, Phyllis
Anne (Kennedy) Polovitch on September 12, 1960; her son-in-law, John Eugene (Jack)
Polovitch; her husband, George B. on May 15, 1974; her sisters: Hazel, Sylvia, and Mamie;
and her brothers, Harry and Lawrence (Hap) Gipe.
She is survived by her sons, George A. Kennedy and Clarence D. and wife, Barbara
Kennedy and her daughter, Darlene and husband, Harlan Nonhof; 8 grandchildren, 16
great-grandchildren and 6 great-great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Agnes Gipe;
as well as nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services will be held Sat., Sept. 15, at 10:00 a.m. in the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg, with Reverend Darlene Nonhof officiating. Burial will follow in the Deaver Cemetery in Stamford, NE.
Visitation will be Friday from 9 a.m. – 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be given to Hospice Services, Inc. or the Phillips County Retirement Center.
