Mable Mae Hoag was born to Willis and Artimesia Hoag on November 4, 1900, in a sod house near Goodland, Kansas. The family moved by covered wagon to Kirwin, Kansas, when Mae was three years old. There she attended all twelve years of school, was active in the girls' octet and tied for valedictorian in high school. After graduation, Mae attended Normal school at Hays College in Hays, Kansas. Mae was allowed to teach grade school at the age of seventeen because of a shortage of teachers during World War I. She taught five terms in the country schools and one term at Kirwin.
Mae was baptized at an early age and loved to do church work. She taught Vacation Bible School and Sunday school for many years. She sang in a quartette for funerals while living at Cedar. Mae married Harvey Kelling of Cedar, Kansas, on July 11, 1923. To this union were born Ruth, Elaine and Keith. They made their home on a farm near Cedar, Kansas. They lived about a year in Los Angeles, California, but returned to manage their farm after World War II started.
Mae was active in Wide Awake Women's Extension Club, Cultus Federated Club, Women's Christian Temperance Union (WCTU) and church. Mae and Harvey were leaders of the Cedar Solomon Valley 4-H Club for many years. Mae gave readings and received many awards. She received first place in Federated Ladies Club's competition and received a diamond, the highest award from WCTU. She was an American Red Cross Gray Lady. Mae loved her country and was known for her reading of "The Ragged Old Flag." She gave readings on Phillipsburg telethon for many years. Mae was Old Settlers Day queen at Kirwin, Kansas, in 2001.
Mae and Harvey moved to Phillipsburg, Kansas when they retired from their farm in 1970. Mae died on November 30, 2010, in Lincoln, NE, at 110 years of age at the Independence House on Coddington. She was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters: Eva Des Jardins, Ruth Wiley and Leah Pruett; her husband, Harvey; son Keith; and grandson Dale Bertrand. She is survived by her children Ruth and husband Irvin Lanier, Arlington Heights, IL, Elaine and husband Dick Bertrand, Lincoln, NE, and daughter-in-law Louise Kelling, Jensen Beach, FL; grandchildren Vicki and husband John Talbot, Ron and wife Carole Lanier, Steve and wife Sylvie Lanier, Diane and husband Kirk Livingston, Linda and husband Ed Bond, Karen and husband Bill England, David and wife Michele Kelling; great grandchildren Rachael Talbot, Lynn, Kent and wife Rebecca, Ryan, Anna, and Sara Lanier, Anaelle Deport, Jill and husband Colby Collura, Kent and wife Sharon Livingston, Jaci Bertrand and husband Matt Parrack, Carissa Bond, Brian Bond, Alexander England and Victoria England as well as many other relatives and friends.
Mae greatly loved and was loved by her family and a host of friends. A celebration of life service is at 1 p.m. in the First Assembly of God church in Phillipsburg, KS, on Saturday, December 11, 2010. Interment is at Cedar Cemetery, Cedar, Kansas, after the church service. Friends may sign the register book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel in Phillipsburg. The family will receive friends for visitation Saturday at 12:15 p.m. at the Assembly of God prior to the celebration of life service.
