Martha Jean Briggs, 72, Norcatur, died Friday, Aug. 25, 2023, at her home.

Jean was born to Kenneth and Elizabeth Briggs in Dundee, Mich., Dec. 5, 1949.

During her career she worked in all phases of restaurant management, construction, home healthcare and even as a forman for Ron-Con Ranch in Myakka, Fla. for four years.

She was a volunteer at the Norcatur Library and always involved in dog rescue and humane treatment organizations. She supported no-kill animal shelters. She loved all her animals, but especially her tiny dog, "Birdie" who she referred to as her baby. She was sure Birdie would be waiting for her when she "crossed over."

Jean enjoyed gardening and always felt closer to God in her gardens.

Preceding her in death were her parents; two brothers, Perry McElroy and Charles McElroy; a sister, Nina Susie Briggs; and her husband, Lawrence Whidden.

She is survived by one son, Kenneth (Charity) Worrick, Maryville, Tenn.; four daughters, Mona Morales; Rebecca (Kenny) Patton, both of Maryville; Angelique Tjaden, Ocean Springs, Miss.; and Raven Worrick, Florida; a brother, Jim Briggs, Hoxie; a sister, Debra Sanders, Norcatur; 10grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Graveside services were held Saturday, Sept. 9 at at 11:00 a.m. in  the Norcatur Cemetery with Jean's friends, Jim Plotts and Halley Roberson, officiating.

The Liberty-Star Club provided refreshments to the family and friends in the Norcatur Community Church fellowship hall following services.
